What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the magical and unique experience of rowing a boat through the crystal-clear, emerald-hued subterranean lake. While the boat ride is the undeniable highlight, some reviewers note that the guided tour is primarily in Hungarian, recommending audio guides for non-speakers. Wait times can be a factor, making advance booking advisable.
"Quite an interesting place. We recommend visiting if you are in the vicinity of Balaton. We did not buy tickets in advance, they were at the box office. Unfortunately, the museum tour was only in Hungarian. You can see the museum on your own in 20 minutes. If you do not know Hungarian, we recommend skipping the main part of the tour. At the end of the tour, a good colorful film about the caves is shown in the 3D cinema. The most interesting thing is the boat ride along the underground river. This is exactly what it is worth coming here for. It is a short but very interesting trip."

"Such a surprising magical place, located in the heart of the town, that was the highlight of our trip to Hungary, the water are so clear, the emerald colors are real!!! And there is no bad smell. A must do! Definitely!"

"A fascinating underground cave right in the middle of the city, where you can take a small boat through winding tunnels of crystal-clear water. The ride is fairly short (about 15 minutes), but absolutely breathtaking. 🚤💎
The boats hold up to four people, and you paddle on your own, which makes the experience even more fun and personal. Some passages are quite narrow, so if you’re claustrophobic, you might want to skip this attraction — but it’s nothing extreme or frightening, just a bit snug in places.
We visited during the autumn school holidays in Hungary, on a weekday, and had no problem buying tickets on the spot — the wait was minimal. The museum exhibition could use a little updating, but overall, it’s a unique and memorable experience that’s definitely worth it. 🌊✨"

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Tips for families: Ensure children are comfortable with enclosed spaces, as some passages are narrow. The descent involves stairs, so consider this if you have very young children or strollers. Bringing snacks and drinks is a good idea, though facilities are available. Booking tickets online in advance is essential to avoid long waits that can test a child's patience.
💰 Budget Travelers
Budget tips: Consider visiting during the off-season or on weekdays when crowds are smaller, potentially reducing wait times. Pack your own snacks and water to save on on-site purchases. If you're traveling on a tight budget, focus on the boat ride as the primary experience, as it's the most distinctive part of the visit.
