"Unbelievably beautiful and peaceful place"

"One has mixed feelings when entering the church, because based on the external features and the height, one envisions a cross vault, while in comparison one sees a closed wooden coffered ceiling, which is a bit strange for this church to me. One inevitably thinks that one wishes they had paid the tax to the Turks and then they wouldn't have burned down Miskolc's iconic building. The thick walls don't fit into the church interior either, and the fact that they placed the last two elements in front of the Gothic window in the sanctuary is not very nice. However, the guided tour was very detailed and informative."

"Miskolc, Avas Reformed Church, in the lower part of Avas Hill. Avas is a volcanic hill, 234 meters high, in the middle of Miskolc, in the city center, and is also the name of the Avas district. The Gothic Reformed Church of Avas is the oldest building in the city center of Miskolc, built in the 1400s. It was originally a Catholic church, dedicated to Saint Stephen, and has been a Reformed church since the 16th century. The church can be seen from several points in the city."

A Glimpse into History
The church's architectural narrative is particularly fascinating. While visitors might anticipate a classic Gothic interior with vaulted ceilings based on its external appearance, they are met with a unique wooden coffered ceiling. This distinctive feature, along with the substantial walls, contributes to a memorable and somewhat unexpected interior experience. The placement of later additions in front of the sanctuary's Gothic window is also a point of architectural discussion.

The carefully renovated centuries-old tombstones provide a tangible link to generations who lived and are remembered in Miskolc. Visiting this area allows for a contemplative experience, reflecting on the enduring history of the site.
Architectural Uniqueness
The substantial thick walls of the church are another notable characteristic, contributing to its historical feel and perhaps its resilience through the ages. These elements, combined with the specific layout and the historical context of its construction and subsequent modifications, make the Avas Reformed Church a subject of interest for architecture enthusiasts. The church's presence is also a significant visual landmark, visible from various vantage points across Miskolc.
