What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The hop-on hop-off bus in Budapest offers a convenient way to see major sights, with many praising its value and the included river cruise. However, inconsistent bus frequency, challenging stop identification, and crowded cruise times are common drawbacks. Some travelers also reported issues with audio guide synchronization and staff helpfulness, leading to a mixed but generally positive experience for first-time visitors.
"Best decision! Budapest is a big city, with heritage buildings spread across both Buda and Pest. Buying a 48-hour hop-on hop-off ticket is a great choice, as it also includes a boat ride. Just keep in mind that at sunset the boat gets very crowded — there was a long line, it was over capacity, and we couldn’t find seats. Plus, with so many “influencers,” it was hard to take pictures. But overall, it was still a good experience!"

"Having seen some of the low reviews of this hop on and off bus service we must have been fortunate as it was a superb way to get our bearings of the city. We first boarded outside the Dohany street synagogue and did a full loop of the route before deciding where we would like to visit first. The audio guide was available in many languages including English and gave us an insight into what we were passing by. I’m not sure how much more detail people need, if more was given on certain sites they wouldn’t be able to tell you about the next point of interest.
Tickets were easily bought on board and were great value if you use the service for the day.
The free boat cruise didn’t have audio as mentioned by others but it was a beautiful day and we just enjoyed the little trip up and down the Danube getting a different view point from the water. It’s a great chance to get some photos and videos of the city."

"I do not recommend the hop-on hop-off bus! Unless you get on at the beginning all the seats on the inside will be taken already, and the upstairs seats were freezing - and still mostly occupied. It's very difficult to locate the different pick-up spots. I had a policeman give me directions, but they were still incorrect, and Google Maps didn't help much. On top of that the staff were rude and unhelpful."

Frequently Asked Questions
🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Budapest has an excellent public transportation system including trams, metro, and buses. Purchasing a 72-hour transit pass can be a cost-effective alternative to hop-on hop-off tours for exploring the city at your own pace.
Finding the stops can be challenging as signage is often small or missing. It's advisable to consult the bus company's map beforehand and be prepared to ask locals for directions, though even Google Maps might not always be precise.
Many major attractions are accessible via the hop-on hop-off bus routes. Alternatively, Budapest's public transport network is efficient, with trams and metro lines connecting key areas like Andrássy Avenue and the Buda Castle district.
While some attractions in Pest are walkable, Budapest is quite spread out. Walking between Buda and Pest is not feasible, making a hop-on hop-off bus or public transport essential for covering distances.
The frequency of buses can be inconsistent, leading to longer waiting times at stops. This is a common point of feedback, so factor in potential delays when planning your day.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Tickets can often be purchased directly on the bus, which can be convenient. However, it's worth checking online for potential discounts or package deals that might include other attractions or tours.
Ticket prices vary depending on the duration (e.g., 24, 48, or 72 hours). They are generally considered good value if you plan to use the service extensively throughout the day.
While not always advertised, it's worth checking the official websites of the bus tour operators or looking for city passes that might bundle hop-on hop-off access with other attractions.
Most tickets include unlimited rides on the bus for the duration purchased, access to multiple routes covering major landmarks, and often a complimentary Danube river cruise. Some packages may also include guided walking tours.
The river cruise is usually included, but it's best to check the specific terms of your ticket. Sunset cruises can be very popular and crowded, so consider booking or arriving early if you want a specific time slot.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
The audio guide is available in multiple languages and provides information about the sights you pass. However, some users report that it may not always be perfectly synchronized with the actual landmarks.
The upper deck offers great views, but it can be cold and windy, especially outside of summer. It's advisable to bring layers of clothing for comfort.
Routes typically cover major attractions like Buda Castle, the Parliament Building, Heroes' Square, Andrássy Avenue, and the Dohány Street Synagogue.
Breakdowns can happen, and in such cases, you might need to find alternative transport like Ubers or public transit. This has been reported as a disappointing experience by some travelers.
Yes, some routes include stops at unique landmarks like the Columbo statue, offering a fun photo opportunity for fans of the detective show. There's also a stop at Puskás Arena for sports enthusiasts.
📸 📸 Photography
The upper deck provides excellent vantage points for capturing cityscapes, especially along Andrássy Avenue and when approaching the Parliament Building.
Absolutely! The river cruise offers a unique perspective of the Parliament, Buda Castle, and the bridges. Aim for times outside of peak sunset crowds for clearer shots.
Early mornings and late afternoons (golden hour) offer beautiful light for photography. The city is also stunning when illuminated at night.
The Parliament Building, Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, and the Chain Bridge are all highly photogenic. Heroes' Square also offers grand architectural shots.
During the festive season, the bus tour can take you near beautifully decorated streets and Christmas markets, offering opportunities for festive photos.

Maximizing Your Hop-On Hop-Off Experience
To make the most of your ticket, consider doing a full loop first to map out your desired stops. Be aware that bus stop signage can be poor, so having a map or using your phone's GPS is recommended. The upper deck offers fantastic views but can be chilly, so dress in layers. While convenient, some users have reported long wait times between buses and less-than-helpful staff, suggesting that for extensive exploration, traditional transit passes might offer better value.
The Danube River Cruise: A Scenic Bonus
However, travelers should be mindful of timing. The sunset cruise is particularly popular and can become very crowded, leading to long queues and difficulty finding seats. This can also impact the ability to take clear photos due to the number of people and 'influencers'. For a more relaxed experience and better photo opportunities, consider opting for an earlier or later cruise time.
Beyond the Bus: Alternative Exploration
Many travelers also enjoy walking tours to delve deeper into specific neighborhoods like the Castle District or the Jewish Quarter. These tours often provide historical insights and local stories that might be missed on a bus tour. For a more personalized experience, consider using ride-sharing apps or taxis for shorter distances or when public transport routes are less direct.
