"A really nice experience to visit the cellar’s of köbanya, it was a real hot summer day but was amazed by the cold temperatures inside the cellar, the system is enormous and even though film shootings where happening, we had a nice 40 minutes walk in the system. If possible and like to see some real budapest secrets then try to get an appointment to visit this."

"Very interesting not so much for the venue but the rich history behind it. Used as primary quarry to build opera, parliament etc in Budapest.Largest beer factory and airplane assembly in WWII. And the rise and sad demise of the beer making dinasty, who lost nearly all their possessions due to communists on 1948. Last Dreher, Jenő died in the same year. Only by appointment."

The History of Kőbánya Underground
After their mining days, the cool, stable environment of these cellars made them ideal for industrial use. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they were transformed into a massive hub for wine and beer production. The famous Dreher brewery, among others, utilized these subterranean spaces for aging their beverages. During World War II, some sections were even repurposed for airplane assembly, highlighting the diverse and critical roles this underground system has played throughout history.
Today, while much of the system remains inaccessible or is still used for storage, guided tours offer a glimpse into its fascinating past. Visitors can learn about the quarrying techniques, the industrial boom, and the eventual decline of some of these enterprises, particularly after the communist nationalizations in 1948.
Exploring the Cellars: What to Expect
Guides are essential for navigating the complex and understanding the historical context. They'll point out remnants of past operations, explain the geological formations, and share stories of the people who worked and utilized these spaces. The temperature is a constant cool, making it a welcome respite from summer heat but requiring warmer clothing in cooler months.
Be prepared for an authentic experience. While some areas are well-maintained for tours, others might show signs of their industrial past or even occasional use by the homeless, as noted by some visitors. This is part of its raw charm, offering a unique perspective on Budapest's hidden layers.
