"There was no notice on the menu, but a 15% service charge was added to the food price.
I can accept this.
The real problem started after that.
When I checked my card payment later, I noticed that 25% had been added in total.
However, the receipt I was given only shows a 15% service charge.
I realized this after leaving the table, so I asked the staff why the receipt says 15% while my card was charged 25%.
The waiter did not admit any mistake. Instead, he said:
“The 15% service charge is for the restaurant, and the additional 10% is a tip for the waiter. So we add 25% in total. We charged it without asking. All restaurants on this street do the same.”
He said this without any apology.
As someone traveling around the world, I am unfortunately used to dealing with situations like this.
Still, it was very disappointing to experience this in Hungary.
At first, I thought this might be just one waiter acting on his own and pocketing the money.
So I spoke to another staff member and explained again that the receipt amount and the card charge did not match.
He told us to wait outside while he checked.
After waiting more than 5 minutes, we went back inside and found him eating pizza.
He then said:
“What the first waiter told you is correct. We add 25% to the bill here.”
At least two male staff members were involved, clearly aware of this practice.
I have no problem paying 25% for good and honest service — this is normal in the United States.
However, considering the food, the attitude, and especially charging extra money without consent and without proper documentation, this behavior is unacceptable and possibly illegal.
I am not the only one who experienced this.
