What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Wilson Trail is lauded for its spectacular, rewarding views, especially from peaks like Violet Hill. While many sections offer well-maintained paths and historical points of interest, some parts are extremely challenging with relentless ascents and descents. Hikers advise thorough preparation, especially regarding water and footwear, for the tougher segments.
"Trail entrance is right next to the bus stop. Relatively easy climb with staircase all the way to Ma Gang Shan View Point that offers great view of the bay. That takes less than an hour. From there, you can continue to have longer hike to the top via the sand-stone path."

"This (Wilson Trail Section 9) is the hardest thing I've (26F) done in my life. I teared up many times in this trail that took us 8 hours (with plenty of breaks that were not a choice but a voluntary bodily reaction) total. One might ask; why not just turn back? Well because I'm about to tell you 2 important points to note:
1. The first peak is the summit. Turning back meant that we would have to trek down the highest elevation in the trail. Pressing on, however, is just as bad so here's the next point to note should you choose to continue the trail:
2. It's not all downhill from the summit. It felt like a never-ending ascent and descent, where every new peak tested the strength of my calves and my mind. I still remember how it felt looking at the peak ahead of me when I had barely made it up (and down) the previous one.
Perhaps it was the unpreparedness and a whole lot of underestimation but hey, if an obese girly like myself can do it, you definitely can too. Mind over matter and all that but pack enough water and maybe consider going with someone who has mountaineering experience, just in case. We were lucky to have clear skies and insanely beautiful views at every turn, but I knew God understood how desperate I was for a small win up there.
Funnily enough, contrary to its name, this trail had only reminded me of - no, emphasised - my mortality. Glad I lived to tell the tale (that everyone around me will have to hear again and again until I'm over it). Stay safe!"

"Explore Wilson Trail Section 5, starting from Sha Tin Wai and passing through Fo Dau Ping Peak. Along the way, discover historic Japanese tunnels. From the trail, you can choose to ascend Lion Rock for panoramic views or descend into Wong Tai Sin district. For the more adventurous, continuing on to Kowloon Peak is also an option."

Navigating the Wilson Trail: A Section-by-Section Guide
When planning your hike, consider your fitness level and the time you have available. Many visitors opt to hike specific sections rather than the entire trail. For instance, a popular day hike involves sections around Violet Hill and Twin Peaks, offering a significant challenge and incredible views within a few hours. Conversely, attempting the entire trail requires multi-day planning and significant preparation. It's always wise to consult detailed trail maps and recent conditions before embarking on any section.
Key takeaway: The Wilson Trail is not a monolithic hike but a collection of diverse trails. Researching individual sections will help you tailor your experience, whether you're seeking a short scenic walk or a multi-day trekking adventure. Remember to check weather forecasts and inform someone of your hiking plans, especially for more remote or challenging sections.
The Challenge and Reward: Hiking the Toughest Sections
Despite the arduous nature of these sections, the rewards are immense. The panoramic views from the summits are described as 'insanely beautiful' and 'worth it,' offering a profound sense of accomplishment. Hikers who push through the challenges are often met with breathtaking vistas that make the struggle feel worthwhile. The experience, though tough, is often remembered as a significant personal achievement.
For those considering these tougher sections, it's highly recommended to go with a companion, ideally someone with mountaineering experience, or at least to be extremely well-prepared. Packing sufficient water, high-energy snacks, and wearing appropriate gear are essential. Mind over matter plays a significant role, but physical preparation is key to safely enjoying the spectacular scenery these challenging sections offer.
Capturing the Views: Photography Tips for the Wilson Trail
To make the most of your photography, consider bringing a wide-angle lens to capture the grandeur of the landscapes. A telephoto lens can be useful for zooming in on distant cityscapes or interesting details. Given the hiking involved, keeping your gear lightweight and accessible is important. Remember that many sections have limited shade, so protecting your equipment from the sun and potential sweat is also a consideration.
Beyond the sweeping vistas, unique photographic subjects can be found. Section 5, for instance, features historical Japanese tunnels that offer a more atmospheric and intriguing subject matter. Depending on the season, you might also find blooming flowers along the trails, adding pops of color to your shots. Always be mindful of your surroundings and safety while taking photos, especially on steeper or more exposed sections of the trail.
