Reviews Summary

Hong Kong International Airport is widely praised as one of the world's best, lauded for its cleanliness, efficiency, and modern amenities that make even long layovers enjoyable. Travelers appreciate the vast array of shops and dining, excellent customer service, and smooth immigration processes. However, some find the airport too noisy and lacking sufficient comfortable sleeping areas.

"I was very impressed with Hong Kong International Airport when I had a layover there. The airport is enormous, highly modern, and very clean and well-organised. It's really big, yet it's also extremely easy and friendly to go around.
Travelers will love that there are free water refill stations provided in multiple places and those are easy to find. This is well-designed and works like a charm. From the immigration, everything is well planned. It strikes a good mix between size and comfort. You can find a lot of EBOs, Food Courts, Coffee Shop around you. Those who love to explore and interested in walking, this is the best place for a long lay over. I particularly liked that there were different places to sit around the airport. You can always find a comfy place to sit, whether you like quiet corners, open lounges, or chairs near charging stations, even small private meeting rooms.
The Airport would be a terrific experience for people who are using for Arrivals, Departures, and even for lay overs.
Tip: Don’t forget to walk in to the sky deck which is in the top floor to explore. You can see observatory views of AirPort and SeaPort from there."

"Hong Kong International Airport is truly massive, but at the same time very easy and friendly to navigate. The terminal has a bright, spacious layout with plenty of shops, cafés, and restaurants, so you’ll never be bored during a layover. It can feel a bit distracting because there is so much around you, and you should expect some walking to reach the gates, especially in the newer sections of the terminal. One thing I really appreciated is the variety of seating areas spread throughout the airport. You can always find a comfortable place to rest, whether you prefer quiet corners, open lounges, or seats near charging stations. Free water refill stations are also available and very easy to locate, which is a huge plus for travelers. Overall, it is a well-designed and efficient airport that balances size with comfort. A great experience for both transit and departure Passengers."

"I absolutely loved my time at Hong Kong International Airport. From the moment I arrived, everything felt seamless and well thought out. Immigration and security were impressively efficient, even during busy hours, which set the tone for a stress-free journey. Getting into the city was just as easy—the Airport Express train whisked me to Central in under half an hour, complete with free Wi-Fi that made the ride even more convenient.

Inside the terminal, HKIA feels like a destination in itself. I found myself wandering through luxury boutiques and tech stores, amazed at the variety of shopping options. When it came to food, the airport truly delivered: I grabbed a quick bite at Pret A Manger but also couldn’t resist trying dim sum at Tim Ho Wan, a Michelin-starred spot right inside the airport. The design of the space adds to the experience too—bright, spacious halls with natural light and clear signage made navigation effortless.

What really stood out were the extras that make HKIA unique. The Aviation Discovery Centre and SkyDeck gave me a chance to enjoy the airport beyond just travel, turning it into a place where you can explore and relax. Overall, HKIA blends efficiency, comfort, and entertainment so well that it transforms travel into something enjoyable rather than just functional."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Terminals and Transport

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is a sprawling hub with two main terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 1 is the primary terminal for most international flights, while Terminal 2 handles a mix of departures and arrivals, including low-cost carriers. Navigating between them is straightforward, with the Automated People Mover (APM) system efficiently connecting different concourses within Terminal 1. Reddit

Getting to and from the city is a breeze. The Airport Express train is the fastest option, whisking you to Hong Kong Station in just 24 minutes. For a more budget-friendly approach, a comprehensive network of buses and shuttles connects HKIA to virtually every corner of Hong Kong. Taxis are also readily available, with different colored taxis serving specific regions. For onward travel to Macau or Mainland China, ferry services depart directly from Skypier. Reddit

When choosing your transport, consider luggage. While the MRT is an option, many stations lack escalators, making it challenging with large bags. Buses are often preferred by travelers with significant luggage due to their accessibility. Reddit

Making the Most of Your Layover

HKIA is renowned for being an excellent airport for layovers, often described as a 'city within a city.' Travelers can find a surprising number of amenities to make their extended stay comfortable and engaging. Airport lounges, accessible via Priority Pass or airline affiliations, offer a sanctuary with showers, comfortable seating, and refreshments, transforming a long wait into a relaxing experience. TikTokReddit

Beyond lounges, the airport boasts an extensive selection of shopping and dining options. From luxury brands to everyday essentials and a diverse range of international and local cuisines, you won't go hungry or bored. For those interested in aviation, the plane spotting Sky Bridge near Gates 13-22 provides excellent views of aircraft movements. Instagram Additionally, the Nine Dragon City Walled City exhibit offers a unique cultural immersion, recreating a historical Hong Kong landmark. Instagram

However, it's worth noting that some travelers find the airport can be noisy, and finding truly quiet, comfortable spots for extended sleep can be challenging. While recliners are available, they are often occupied, and many seats have armrests that hinder comfortable rest. Planning to book a lounge or a transit hotel might be advisable for those seeking a proper night's sleep. Reddit

Historical Echoes: From Kai Tak to HKIA

Hong Kong's aviation history is rich, with the iconic Kai Tak Airport serving as its primary gateway from 1925 to 1998. Kai Tak was legendary for its dramatic approach, where planes had to make a sharp right turn at low altitude, often flying perilously close to residential buildings. This unique and thrilling landing experience is a significant part of aviation lore and is remembered fondly by enthusiasts. TikTok+1

In 1998, the modern Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) took over, offering a state-of-the-art facility designed to handle the growing demands of global air travel. HKIA is a testament to modern engineering and efficiency, vastly different from the bustling, urban-integrated Kai Tak. Today, visitors can still explore the legacy of Kai Tak through historical displays and exhibits within HKIA, offering a fascinating contrast between the old and the new. Instagram
