What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Guyana Zoo offers an affordable glimpse into native wildlife, with many appreciating the low entry fee and the chance to see local species. However, a significant number of visitors express concern over the unsanitary conditions and upkeep of animal enclosures, leading to a mixed overall experience.
"The condition of this place is unsanitary. The different cages/habits for the animals are very unpleasant, in other words they stink. However, given that they are live animals much if that is expected. What isn't expected is that it hardly has any animals. A couple parrot and macaws, turtles, 2 snakes and like 2 wild cats (insane) and again the empty cages are very unkept, the trees are overgrown - in the habit, and it smells awful. I think for an organization that making you pay 300 per person and 200 per child knowing that lots of foreigners and local people frequent this place they need to do way better"

"They was no wait time to enter, tickets are $200 Guyana dollars, ministry of tourism for Guyana needs to come up with a renovation plan and budget also have more variety of animals at the zoo because it’s very limited the cages need to be renew and structures are very old for the animals habit. This should be looked into to it would boost tourism for those within this interest field."

"Entry fee per adult has been 200GYD for as long as I can remember, definitely worthy to notice that they’ve kept it affordable.
It could use some cleaning and some of the buildings like the aquarium needs to be rebuilt but there were garbage bins all around which is helpful, and there’s some nice shady spots to catch a break from the sun, not forgetting the lovely breeze all around that area.
Worth the visit and lots of amazing animals to see, would love to see improvements made to their homes."

Understanding the Guyana Zoo's Role
While the intention is commendable, the reality on the ground has drawn mixed reviews. Some visitors praise the affordable entry and the opportunity to see local animals, while others express deep concern over the living conditions of the animals. The descriptions of unsanitary enclosures, overgrown habitats, and a perceived lack of variety suggest that the zoo faces significant challenges in maintaining optimal environments for its residents. This duality is important for potential visitors to understand before their trip.
Despite the criticisms, the zoo remains a point of interest for those keen on wildlife and conservation. The presence of garbage bins and shady spots indicates some efforts towards visitor comfort, and the natural breeze is often mentioned as a positive aspect. For those interested in supporting local conservation efforts, a visit can still be meaningful, provided expectations are managed regarding the facility's current state.
Navigating Visitor Feedback
However, a recurring theme in reviews is the poor condition of the animal enclosures. Words like 'unsanitary,' 'stink,' 'unkept,' and 'dire conditions' appear frequently, painting a picture of a facility in need of substantial upgrades. Some visitors have been deeply saddened, even moved to tears, by what they perceived as inadequate care and solitary confinement for some animals. This has led to calls for renovation and increased animal variety to boost tourism and improve welfare.
It's crucial for prospective visitors to weigh these contrasting perspectives. If you are looking for a pristine, modern zoo experience, the Guyana Zoo may not meet those expectations. However, if your interest lies in supporting a local conservation effort and seeing native wildlife in a more naturalistic, albeit rustic, setting, it can still offer a unique experience. Being aware of the criticisms can help manage expectations and allow for a more informed visit.
