What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Tak'alik Ab'aj, often comparing it favorably to larger sites like Tikal for its unique blend of Olmec and Mayan history within a stunning, garden-like tropical setting. The guided tours are highly praised for their informative content, though some note the presence of a small, sad animal zoo. It's considered a beautiful and worthwhile 'hidden gem' for those interested in Mesoamerican cultures.
"I enjoyed this park as much or more as Tikal. The ruins are located in a beautiful tropical setting with lots of trees, plants and flowers. The ruins are a mix of Olmec and early Mayan temples, stelas, altars, monuments and other artifacts. The site is still under excavation and you can see sites in various stages. The park very walkable and there is information displayed at most to describe the contents of each site. It also appears that there is an self guided audio tour available; however I did not ask about the price as we had a guide. I highly recommend this site for anyone interested in the history of the Mayan and Olmec cultures."
