What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Ritidian Point's stunning white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, calling it a beautiful and tranquil escape. Many appreciate the free entry and the opportunity to explore the wildlife refuge. However, strong currents and rip tides are a significant concern, requiring extreme caution when entering the water. Some also note the limited amenities and the need to check opening days.
"Excellent beach areas, though do pay attention to where it is safe to swim if doing so. The main parking area seemed to be the safest as long as you stay inside the reef. Some fish and coral if snorkeling, but better areas to be found on the island for that. Some wildlife trails to explore and family friendly. Very small museum. Check online for days open!"

"Ritidian on Northern Guam. Is one of the most beautiful beaches on Guam. There are hiking trails and tours that are available at the visitors center. If you're lucky, you will encounter some wildlife. But be cautious when entering the waters due to strong currents. And wear sneakers or beach shoes because there are some hidden dangers lurking in the sands underwater. You are not allowed to bbq with wood or charcoal pits.. but you can cook with a small butane burner. No pets or drones are allowed, and please keep the beaches clean of all trash. Ritidian Beach is a beautiful place to enjoy for everyone so let's do our share to keep it beautiful."

"A beautiful beach inside of a wildlife area. Lots of parking, sand for hundreds of feet in both directions, lots of wildlife, bathrooms on site, and gorgeous views. Also, it's free! Drop in and check it out! And as always, pack out whatever you bring in!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Understanding Ritidian Point's Ecosystem
One of the most striking aspects of the refuge is its insect life. During mid-October, the area becomes a haven for thousands of blue-banded king crow butterflies, creating a truly magical spectacle. This unique natural phenomenon adds another layer to the visitor experience, making it a prime spot for nature photography and appreciation.
Sadly, the refuge has also faced challenges. The single mature Serianthes nelsonii tree, a symbol of hope, was severely damaged by Typhoon Mawar in 2023 and is no longer living. This highlights the delicate balance of the ecosystem and the importance of ongoing conservation efforts to protect Guam's natural heritage.
Navigating Water Safety and Currents
Many visitors, even those familiar with the ocean, express caution. Some have noted that even wading in the water can be intimidating due to the powerful pull. It's advisable to stay within knee-deep water if you are unsure about the conditions or if you are not a strong swimmer.
For those looking to enjoy the water, checking the tide forecast is highly recommended. Visiting during low tide can sometimes offer calmer conditions. Always assess the water before entering and never swim alone. If you're seeking more predictable swimming conditions, other beaches on Guam might be a better choice, but for the adventurous and cautious, Ritidian Point offers unparalleled natural beauty.
Planning Your Visit: Hours, Access, and What to Bring
Remember that Ritidian Point is a protected wildlife refuge, so pets and drones are not allowed. You'll need to bring everything you need with you, including food and plenty of water, as there are no vendors on-site. For comfort and safety, wearing sneakers or beach shoes is recommended due to potential hazards in the sand.
Finally, a key principle for visiting any natural area is to pack out what you pack in. Help preserve the pristine beauty of Ritidian Point by taking all your trash with you. The visitor center offers informative displays about the refuge's ecosystem and conservation efforts.
