What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently describe Ilulissat Icefjord as one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places on Earth, rivaling Antarctica for its stunning iceberg displays. The sheer scale and natural grandeur leave a lasting impression, with many recommending boat tours and hikes for the best experience. Some note the high cost of travel and tours, and the unpredictable Arctic weather.

"Amazing icefjord with 2-hours tour. We are also seeing the humpback whale during tour.

When you take that tour from Diskoline, make sure to read the instruction for meet point carefully otherwise someone will point you to the Unique tour pier at the bay."

"Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, located 250 km north of the Arctic Circle on Greenland's west coast. It encompasses 402,400 ha of glacier ice (80%), fjord, and tundra. Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier dominates the fjord. It’s the Fastest-moving glacier outside Antarctica (19–40 m/day) . Calves ~46 km³ of ice annually—10% of Greenland's total iceberg production. Icebergs often exceed 1 km in height, lingering for years before exiting to Disko Bay . Studied for 250+ years, advancing understanding of ice-sheet dynamics and climate change . Ice layers preserve 250,000-year-old atmospheric records (via trapped air bubbles) . Nutrient upwelling from melting ice supports plankton, attracting halibut, seals, and whales (fin, minke, humpback). Greenland halibut thrive here, reaching ages of 25 years due to limited fishing in the fjord. Climate change accelerates glacier retreat; Sermeq Kujalleq lost mass yearly from 1998–2018. 31,000+ tourists (2019) hike trails, kayak, or take boat/ helicopter tours, risking erosion and wildlife disruption. It’s a living laboratory where ice meets ocean, Ilulissat exemplifies Arctic fragility and grandeur, offering unparalleled insight into planetary climate systems."

"Beautiful viewpoint along the yellow route. Photos do not do it justice. I visited twice when I was here for a week. And I was even lucky enough to see a humpback whale close to the icebergs. Bring binoculars and a camera!
While the trail is great, I do recommend going off trail to get better views of the icebergs.
The viewpoint can be visited as part of the Yellow Trail that runs from Nukissiorfiit Power Plant to the visitor centre or vice versa. See the map of trails in photos. Throughout all the trail, you can see icebergs from at least one side, and at some points, you can even see it from nearly all angles. On the trail, there is a cafe to get a bite to eat and something to drink. This is not wheelchair and stroller accessible. Highly recommend this hike for anyone who is able. Remember bug spray in summer as there are many mosquitos in this location."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Majestic Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier

The Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier, also known as the Jakobshavn Glacier, is the powerhouse behind the Ilulissat Icefjord. It's one of the fastest-moving glaciers outside of Antarctica, advancing at an astonishing rate of 19–40 meters per day. This dynamic glacier calves approximately 46 cubic kilometers of ice annually, contributing significantly to Greenland's total iceberg production. Instagram+1

This relentless movement and calving process are what create the colossal icebergs that drift through the fjord. These icebergs can tower over a kilometer high and take years to melt completely as they journey towards Disko Bay and the open ocean. The glacier's activity makes the Icefjord a constantly changing landscape, meaning no two visits are ever quite the same. Instagram+1

Scientists have been studying Sermeq Kujalleq for over 250 years, using it as a crucial site to understand ice-sheet dynamics and the impacts of climate change. The ice layers here preserve atmospheric records dating back 250,000 years, offering invaluable insights into Earth's past climate. Reddit

Wildlife Encounters in the Icefjord

The nutrient-rich waters of the Ilulissat Icefjord, fed by the melting ice, create a thriving ecosystem that attracts a variety of marine life. This abundance makes it a prime location for wildlife viewing, particularly for whale enthusiasts. Reddit

Humpback whales are frequently spotted here, gracefully gliding among the icebergs. You might also encounter minke whales and fin whales, especially during the summer months when they are more active. Seals are also a common sight, often seen basking on ice floes. InstagramReddit

The presence of these animals is a testament to the health of the fjord's ecosystem, which also supports large populations of Greenland halibut. The limited fishing in the fjord allows these fish to reach impressive ages. Observing this vibrant wildlife against the backdrop of immense icebergs offers a truly unforgettable Arctic experience. Reddit

Navigating the Icefjord: Tours and Activities

Exploring the Ilulissat Icefjord is best done through organized tours that offer safe and informative experiences. Boat tours are the most popular, taking visitors on scenic journeys through Disko Bay, allowing them to witness the sheer scale of the icebergs up close. These tours often depart from Ilulissat harbor and can last from a couple of hours to a full day. TikTokInstagram

For a more adventurous perspective, kayaking among the icebergs provides an intimate encounter with the frozen giants. This activity requires good physical condition and is best suited for experienced kayakers or those on guided tours. Dog sledding is a quintessential Arctic experience, primarily available during the winter months when the landscape is covered in snow. TikTok+1

Hiking the well-marked trails, such as the Yellow Trail, offers stunning panoramic views of the Icefjord from land. These trails are accessible year-round, though winter conditions may require special gear. Regardless of the chosen activity, booking in advance is highly recommended, as tours can fill up quickly, especially during the peak summer season. InstagramReddit
