Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the breathtaking views of massive icebergs along the Blue Route, calling it the highlight of their Ilulissat experience. The challenging yet rewarding hike, especially when reversed to keep the icebergs in sight, is highly recommended. Some note the lack of facilities and the demanding nature of the gorge section, advising thorough preparation.

"The hike itself is the nicest hike from all those three hikes that you can see at the Icefjord Center. I just loved the icebergs all around and walking pass them for hours.
I strongly recommend to start at the trail's usual end and then to walk towards Sermermiut and the Icefjord Center. The reason is that the part around the storages and the dog kernels there is very dirty, smelly and the least interesting. You won't even get any views there. So to have something to look forward to, keep the best for the end.
Count with about 4 hours of contact walk. There are no toilets, neither cafés in between the start and end point."

"A slightly demanding route, but it's fantastic when you walk along the ice fjord with all the beautiful icebergs"

Rene Balle Ligneul

"Fantastic walk down to the Icefjord. There are 4 hiking trails in Ilulissat itself, all starting from the Icefjord Center.
The red one is 1 km long and goes from the Icefjord Center down to the sea with the icebergs. It is a relatively straight, easy route.
The green one is 1.4 km long and goes from the Icefjord Center down to the sea and Sermermiut, parallel to the red route. You walk the whole way on a long wooden bridge and the view is formidable. Handicap friendly.
The yellow one is 2.7 km long and goes from the Icefjord Center down to the sea, after which it makes a bend to the right and you follow the Icefjord all the way to the Power Plant. Here I strongly recommend taking the route in reverse. So you start at the Power Plant, so you always walk towards the Icefjord and not walk with your back to it.
The blue route is the longest at almost 7 km. and goes from the Icefjord Center down to the sea. You actually follow the green route for the first part and from here you then turn left. you follow the Isfjorden on to the Koroorsuaq gorge which you go up through. Here I would strongly recommend that you start the trip in reverse (just like the yellow route), so that you start at the Stone Quarry and end at the Isfjord Center. That way you always walk with the Isfjorden in front of you and not with your back to the Icebergs. and last but not least, you will get through the hard part of the route first, as the gorge rises and falls by 150 meters in altitude.

All routes are well marked."

Navigating the Blue Route: A Hiker's Guide

The Blue Route in Ilulissat is a captivating, albeit challenging, hiking experience that immerses you in the grandeur of the Ilulissat Icefjord. Spanning approximately 7 kilometers, this trail is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, including the imposing Koroorsuaq gorge. Many visitors find that reversing the typical route, starting at the Stone Quarry and ending at the Icefjord Center, enhances the experience. This allows you to consistently face the magnificent icebergs, rather than having your back to them, and tackle the most strenuous part of the hike, the gorge's elevation changes, earlier on. Reddit

Key considerations for hikers include wearing appropriate footwear, as the terrain can be uneven and demanding, especially within the gorge. It's also vital to carry ample water, as there are no facilities like toilets or cafes along the entire length of the trail. The hike typically takes around 4 hours, but this can vary based on individual pace and the frequency of stops to absorb the breathtaking scenery. Reddit

Beyond the physical challenge, the Blue Route offers profound insights into the region's natural beauty and history. You'll traverse areas with remnants of the ancient Inuit settlement of Sermermiut, providing a unique cultural dimension to your trek. The Majesty of Ilulissat Icebergs

The primary draw of the Blue Route, and indeed Ilulissat, is the unparalleled spectacle of the icebergs. These colossal formations are calved from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, one of the most active and fastest-moving glaciers in the world. As they drift through the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site, they create a dynamic and ever-changing landscape that is both humbling and mesmerizing. Reddit

Photographers will find endless opportunities to capture the scale, texture, and ethereal beauty of these icy giants. The interplay of light and shadow on the ice, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, can produce truly magical shots. Wide-angle lenses are excellent for conveying the vastness of the fjord and the sheer size of the icebergs, while telephoto lenses can capture intricate details and textures. Instagram

When visiting, remember that these icebergs are powerful natural phenomena. While the Blue Route offers safe vantage points, it's crucial to maintain a respectful distance and adhere to marked paths. The sheer scale of the icebergs is difficult to comprehend until you witness them firsthand, making the Blue Route a truly unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
