"hey guys, antonia here with another review: do yourself a favour and get to this beach! I mean it’s like a wave pool but outside in mother nature. and the bag hooks to hang your bag so it doesn’t get wet and swept away by the waves are just an exemplary example of modern initiative. incredible"

"There is much more beach under the waterline than above it. For sitting on the beach there are only a couple of small areas of sand. Under the water the sand stretches at least 50 meters out from shore and remains mostly shallow. There were a few scattered areas of rocks but no urchins when we were there in July. Great for swimming or just bobbing along while staying cool on a hot day."

"4 stars only as there is a lot of rubbish that idiot people leave behind. Plastic wrappers and bags. Spent some time picking it all up and binning it. Nice beach though. We used it most of our holiday.
Small sandy beach that does at times get crowded. Nice fresh water showers for body and feet. Very very cold water lol."

Understanding the Koum Kapi Experience
While the beach offers a refreshing escape, it's important to manage expectations regarding space. There are only a couple of small sandy areas above the waterline, meaning traditional sunbathing with ample space can be challenging. Many visitors who stay nearby find it perfect for a quick dip without needing extensive gear. The water itself is noted for being very cold, providing a bracing and invigorating experience on a hot Cretan day.
Despite its natural charm, a recurring point in reviews is the issue of litter left by some visitors. Responsible tourism is key here; packing out what you pack in helps preserve the beauty of Koum Kapi for everyone. The proximity to excellent restaurants and cafes in Chania also adds to its appeal, making it easy to combine a beach visit with a meal.
Navigating Koum Kapi: From Harbor to Beach
For those arriving from further afield, taxis or rental cars are options, though parking can be competitive in the surrounding streets, particularly during peak season. Public transport serves the wider Chania area, so checking local bus routes that pass near the eastern city limits might be beneficial. The beach is publicly accessible and free to enter, with no specific opening or closing hours, though daytime visits are naturally more practical and safer.
When you arrive, you'll notice the beach's unique layout. It's not a vast expanse of sand for lounging, but rather an invitation to enjoy the water. The shallow, sandy seabed is the star attraction, making it a fantastic spot for a refreshing swim. Remember to bring your own towels and any desired beach gear, as sunbeds are scarce.
