"Built by emperor Justinian upon -and with the use of- the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Trikki, among the most prominent in Thessaly, this castle was kept in service ever since.
The Byzantines used it to monitor and control the rich farmlands of the region. This function was continued by the Ottomans, who maintained it with minor modifications, namely the adjustments on the ramparts to accommodate cannons and (much later) the clock tower.
Its location is ideal for the aforementioned purposes, yet its natural defenses are not as forbidding as usually seen at many a Greek acropolis. An additional enclosure of a secondary wall and large towers at the most strategic positions remedy this imperfection quite effectively.
If you happen to be around, it is well worth a visit. The castle is well maintained and offers an interesting and easy visit, which can easily be combined with a refreshment or a meal at one of the many restaurants and cafés to be found in the city just outside the walls."
