Reviews Summary

Spinalonga is widely praised for its fascinating and poignant history, beautiful ruins, and stunning sea views. Visitors find it a deeply moving and worthwhile experience, especially when exploring the former leper colony. Some note that it can get crowded and hot, and suggest strategic timing for a better visit.

"Fantastic island that was inhabited by lepers lovingly restored, beautiful views and amazing to walk around"

Graham Stewart

"I do not want to take away from the historical aspect of the Island, but the island, its history, its location... are all been used as a monumental tourist cash grab, and it is disgusting!

€20 to enter, no guide, no information, just walk around, read some boards and good luck to you!

The location is beautiful, nature wise, the history is saddening, but the fact that it is been utilised as cash grab is beyond ridiculous. There is no upkeep, so what exactly is the money been used for???

The sad thing is that you do not know this until you get there and once you are there it becomes almost mandatory to pay up and walk it, as what else are you going to do while you wait for the rest of the tour group!?!

And to top it off, our guide, not as in guided tour but the employee of the tour company telling us when to be back for the return boat trip, was most excited about the panoramic view from the top!

My recommendation, check out the photos on my review and save your hard earned money for something more meaningful!"

Pierre Joubert

"We took the boat in planka. 12 euro per person.
Then at the island itself it was 20 euro entrance wich was a bit much.
The island itself was nice to visit and has alot of history."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Poignant History of Spinalonga

Spinalonga's history is a complex tapestry woven with periods of fortification, settlement, and profound human suffering. Originally a strategic Venetian fortress built in the 16th century to protect the harbor of ancient Olous, it later fell under Ottoman rule. The island's most significant and somber chapter began in 1903 when it became home to the last leper colony in Europe, a status it held until 1957. Instagram+2

For nearly six decades, individuals diagnosed with leprosy were exiled to Spinalonga, forced to live in isolation from the outside world. Despite the harsh realities of their condition and exile, the inhabitants managed to build a community, establishing homes, shops, and even a church. The ruins you see today are a testament to their resilience and the lives they carved out under extraordinary circumstances. Instagram Reading about their experiences, perhaps through books like Victoria Hislop's 'The Island,' can profoundly deepen your understanding and emotional connection to the site. Reddit

Visiting Spinalonga is more than just sightseeing; it's a journey through a significant piece of medical and social history. The island serves as a powerful reminder of human endurance, the impact of disease, and the importance of compassion. The stark beauty of the ruins against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea creates an unforgettable and moving experience. TikTokInstagram

Alternatively, you can catch boats from Elounda or Agios Nikolaos. These trips might be slightly longer and can sometimes be part of larger organized tours. When choosing a boat trip, consider the duration, the departure point, and whether any commentary or guided elements are included. Booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during the peak tourist season, to secure your spot and avoid disappointment. TikTok+1

Upon arrival, you'll typically disembark at the island's small harbor. Be prepared for a short walk to the entrance where you'll purchase your admission ticket. The island itself is pedestrian-only, and the terrain can be uneven, so comfortable footwear is essential. Reddit
