What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Four Martyrs Church is widely praised for its stunning interior, featuring impressive frescoes and icons, and its significant historical location. However, some visitors have reported negative experiences related to dress code enforcement and perceived rudeness from staff, which can detract from the overall visit.
"This is a stunning place inside and out. You can take photos just be respectful. I'd love to be in there when it's full"
Jamie Thomson
"I was completely objectified unreasonably. The church itself is lovely but the elderly lady is not. I was wearing a dress because it is over 30 degrees. My hemline is no shorter than my dad’s cargo shorts and my neckline is the same as both her dress and my mother’s. She proceeds to insult me whilst not looking in my eyes and only looking at my chest area and addressing me in a very rude manner. If the bible says you should “love thy neighbour” and love all gods creatures I definitely will not be joining or supporting a religion that holds such convoluted and hypocritical values."

"One of the most important and historic church of Rethymno, dedicated to the local saints, the four martyrs. The church is the biggest in Rethymno and is built on the spot of the martyrdom of the saints. The present church building is a newer version of an older and smaller one. The impressive part is the church interior which is adorned by fantastic frescos and icons of the Cretan religious painting school."

The History and Significance
Visitors are often struck by the impressive interior, which is a testament to the Cretan religious painting school. The walls are adorned with fantastic frescoes and icons that tell stories of faith and devotion. These artistic treasures are a major draw for those interested in religious art and history, offering a glimpse into a rich cultural heritage.
While the church is a place of ongoing worship, it also serves as a historical monument. The relics of the martyrs are a significant draw, though public access is limited to the 28th of each month, adding a layer of exclusivity to certain visits. This blend of living faith and historical reverence makes the Four Martyrs Church a unique and compelling destination.
Navigating Visitor Experiences
One common point of contention involves the dress code and perceived judgment. While modesty is expected in a place of worship, some visitors have reported feeling unfairly scrutinized or insulted for their attire, even when adhering to reasonable standards. This can detract from the spiritual or historical appreciation of the site.
To ensure a positive visit, it's recommended to dress conservatively (covering shoulders and knees) and approach the experience with an open mind and respectful demeanor. Being mindful of the church's sacred nature and the potential for varied personal interpretations of religious etiquette can help navigate these situations.
