What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Dimokastro Ancient Elina for its stunning, wild beauty and spectacular coastal views, especially when visited early for a magical, deserted experience. The well-maintained path up is a significant plus, though the overgrown nature of the ruins requires sturdy footwear and long trousers.
"The disused entry boxes at either end of the site are an indicator that this site appears to be no longer maintained and has been taken by nature. It’s all the better for it, covered with long grass and wild flowers. So it’s not easy going underfoot and if you don’t like getting a few scratches on your legs wear long trousers. It’s a beautiful natural spot with fantastic views in every direction. There’s not a great deal by way of ruins but plenty to get your imagination going. I arrived early in the morning end of May and it was deserted which was magical. The path up from the beach is well maintained and about 20-30 minutes up stairs. I read one review about spiders, but I didn’t see any. I caught a couple of webs in the face as you do in any undergrowth if you are lucky to be first to arrive."

"We followed the path starting from the beach. It is very well renovated and maintained, very easy to find and follow. It was about 15-20 minutes to the top, on a sustained effort.
The views from the top are spectacular, and the ruins were interesting.
One of the best things to do in the area, besides going to the beach"

"Staying at the nearby Marbella Elix hotel, decided to walk up the path. Ended up doing it twice in one week! The path has been renovated and tidied up and is easy to find and follow. Not sure who is responsible for the path but they have made an excellent job of making it both safe and clear. Views from the top are insane! I think it took me about 15 mins to walk up from the base. It was Oct but the temp was 26c although cool amongst the oak trees!"

The Natural Beauty of Dimokastro
Travelers often remark on how the disused entry boxes are a sign of its abandonment, but paradoxically, this has enhanced its appeal. The site is not just about ancient history; it's about the symbiosis between human remnants and the natural world. The views from the top are consistently praised, providing a stunning backdrop that complements the rustic beauty of the ruins.
For those who appreciate a less manicured historical experience, Dimokastro Ancient Elina is a gem. It's a place where you can let your imagination wander, picturing the past amidst the present-day flora. The feeling of discovery and the serene environment make it a standout destination for nature lovers and history buffs alike.
Navigating to and Within Dimokastro
This preferred path is often highlighted by visitors for its clarity and safety, taking approximately 15-20 minutes to reach the summit. It's a sustained effort but well worth it for the views and the experience. In contrast, routes that hug the coastline, while potentially gentler, can be marred by dumped rubbish and abandoned vehicles, detracting from the natural beauty.
Once at the site, visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain. The 'disused entry boxes' are a clue that the site is not formally managed, meaning paths within the ruins can be overgrown. Wearing long trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly advised to navigate comfortably and avoid scratches.
