What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Athos cruises offer breathtaking views of ancient monasteries from the sea, with many travelers enjoying the scenic journey and occasional dolphin sightings. However, some visitors have encountered issues with cancelled trips and difficulties obtaining refunds, as well as aggressive sales tactics on board.
"We had a great experience with the company and the Mount Athos cruise. While it is astonishing nowadays to have 2.000 monks enjoying such a huge part of a country, it is still good to be informed by the history and how we got there. Price for the afternoon cruise was 22 euro per person"
Alessandra Alari
"The tour is quite good, relevantly new boat and clean. Though I think the tour is not about to see the monasteries, but to get to closest point of Mt. Athos. NB: the departure time was delayed for 1 hour and there was no any notification about it. There is a possibility to buy the ticket online 2€ cheaper. It’s quite windy and can be cold on the boat during the tour, remember to take a jacket with you."
Nata KriGo
"We payed upfront for a boat tour with 6 persons in November that got cancelled because of the bad weather. Never got any response on emails and calls for refund. Criminals!"

The 'Avaton' and Mount Athos's Unique Status
While cruises offer a way to witness the grandeur of Mount Athos from a respectful distance, they do not grant access to the monastic communities themselves. For men seeking to visit the monasteries, a special permit known as a 'diamonitirion' is required, which involves a rigorous application process and adherence to strict rules of conduct. The cruises, therefore, serve as a window into this secluded world, allowing visitors to appreciate its architectural marvels and its enduring spiritual aura without breaching its sacred boundaries.
Navigating Cruise Operators and Traveler Experiences
Onboard, the quality of service can vary. While boats are generally clean and new, some passengers have reported aggressive sales tactics from cafeteria staff, which can detract from the overall experience. It's advisable to research specific cruise companies, read recent reviews, and perhaps book closer to your travel date if weather is a concern. Bringing a jacket is a must, as it can be quite windy and cold on the water, even during warmer months.
The Allure of the 'Pirate Ship' and Dolphin Encounters
Beyond the unique boat designs, a common delight for passengers is the chance to spot dolphins. These majestic creatures often swim alongside the boats, adding a magical touch to the maritime experience. Seeing dolphins in their natural habitat against the backdrop of the ancient monasteries is a truly memorable sight, often cited as a highlight by travelers.
