What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the challenging yet rewarding hike to Prophet Elias Monastery, praising the stunning panoramic views and the peaceful atmosphere of the site. While the steep ascent requires good fitness and ample water, the shaded trails and the free water at the monastery make it manageable. The unique handmade goods from the monks are also a popular takeaway.
"Great walk up. If you’re fit and in your 20/30s this should just feel like a gentle uphill walk - but I can see why this could be tough for others, just factor in more time for the walk. In the summer it could be worth setting out early cos there’s minimal shade along the way.
ps the giant dog is not aggressive at all - it just barks, but really doesn’t bother you unless triggered!"

"We hiked up to the monastery from Hydra in August, midday on a Monday--VERY hot, but plenty of shade along the way. I think it took us two hours one way coming from the port. It is steep the whole way, lots of switchbacks, then steepest at the top--a little harder than I expected when we set out. The monastery was open when we arrived at the top, and we were very grateful for the free, cold water inside! Photos are from the view along the way up. Very cool to see the west side from the monastery, but the best views were early in the hike in my opinion, so even if you cannot hike all the way up, I think you will enjoy some sights along the way."
