What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Koutavos Lagoon is praised for its potential to see loggerhead turtles and its peaceful walking paths, especially in the northern sections. However, some visitors note that the southern parts of the lagoon can be unloved and accumulate litter, detracting from the overall experience. The historic De Bosset Bridge is also a notable feature.
"North part of the lagoon v.nice would give 4/5 stars. You can follow a path from the bridge on the western shore all the way to the far southern tip of the lagoon. The path turns from slabbed tiles to wide gravel, w/chair accessible, benches every few hundred metres, some lighting+rubbish bins. However the further round you go the more unloved it becomes. Finally ending in a temporary fence blocking access to a lorry park on the edge of this fragile eco environment. The jetty is long time closed which is a real shame as with some TLC this would make a spectacular viewpoint for a very different view back to Argostoli. The prevailing wind direction also means there is a solid 4ft of rubbish floating and lapping up against the shoreline.! Every bit of rubbish that enters the bay looks like it eventually ends up here.!"

Spotting the Majestic Loggerhead Turtles
While sightings are frequent, remember that these are wild animals. Patience is key, and it's important to observe them from a respectful distance. Avoid loud noises or sudden movements that could startle them. The presence of these turtles underscores the ecological importance of the lagoon and the surrounding waters, making it a special place for wildlife enthusiasts.
Pro Tip: While some sources suggest feeding the turtles, it's generally best practice to let them forage naturally to maintain their health and behavior. Enjoy the thrill of spotting them in their natural environment without direct intervention.
Exploring the Koutavos Lagoon Path
As you venture further south along the lagoon, the path transitions to a wider gravel track, which remains accessible for wheelchairs. However, some visitors have noted that the southern end can become less maintained, sometimes ending abruptly or showing signs of neglect and accumulated litter. This highlights the importance of respecting the natural environment and ensuring it remains a beautiful space for both wildlife and visitors.
Despite some areas needing more attention, the walk around Koutavos Lagoon provides a peaceful escape from the bustle of Argostoli. It's a great spot for a quiet moment, enjoying the sounds of nature, and observing the local flora and fauna, including the elegant swans that frequent the waters.

The bridge itself is a testament to the engineering of its time and adds a historical dimension to the modern-day experience of the area.
While the bridge is a beautiful sight, its proximity to the lagoon means that sometimes prevailing winds can carry debris towards the shorelines near its base, a point noted by some visitors. Nevertheless, its historical significance and scenic value make it a must-see when visiting Argostoli.
