Reviews Summary

Kommos is praised for its vast, unspoiled beach and peaceful atmosphere, offering a welcome escape from crowds. However, visitors should be aware of the lack of shade and sunbed rentals, as well as submerged rocks in the water. The archaeological site, while not fully accessible, adds historical intrigue.

"Our favourite beach in the Messara region of Crete by far!! Unspoilt, beautiful beach, kilometres of pristine sand. We prefer the far end part by the cliffs, there used to be sun beds under the taverna, but they seem to have removed them this year. Still, loads of fun! Not much shade, if you’re with small children (or are prone to heat strokes, like I am lol)."

Adrienn Kresznai

"Nice big beach but you should be aware that there is no shade atall and that there is no sun bed rental. We went there with our baby hoping for share but there were no umbrellas and sunbeds. A local told us that it used to be the last years but this year because of the turtles they don't have ot anymore.
Also, you have to be careful when going Into the water. There are huge stone plates which you don't see because of the waves. They can really hurt you."

Felix

"A long, wide and windy beach, not crowded, with available parking. There are paid toilets, and further down there’s also a nudist area. The archaeological ruins are not accessible to the public, but you can see them through the fence."

The Ancient Port of Kommos

Kommos was a vital Minoan harbor town, serving as the port for the nearby palace of Phaistos during the Late Bronze Age (roughly 1650-1250 BC).Instagram Its strategic location on the southern coast of Crete made it a crucial hub for trade and maritime activity in the Aegean. Excavations have revealed a complex settlement with evidence of workshops, houses, and public buildings, painting a picture of a bustling ancient community.

While the archaeological site itself is not fully accessible for public exploration, its presence adds a layer of historical depth to the stunning natural beauty of the beach. Visitors can observe the ruins from the perimeter, imagining the ships that once docked here and the vibrant life that filled this coastal settlement millennia ago. The site's connection to Phaistos, one of Crete's most important Minoan palaces, underscores its historical significance. Reddit

The ongoing archaeological work at Kommos continues to uncover new insights into Minoan civilization, maritime trade, and the daily lives of its inhabitants. It's a reminder of the rich, layered history that lies beneath the sands of Crete, offering a tangible link to a fascinating past.

Kommos Beach: Nature and Conservation

Kommos Beach is renowned for its vast, unspoiled stretch of sand, offering a more tranquil experience compared to its popular neighbor, Matala.Reddit The beach is a significant natural area, particularly known as a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta).

This ecological importance has led to certain conservation measures. In recent years, the traditional rental of sunbeds and umbrellas has been reduced or removed to protect the turtle nesting sites.Reddit While this means less convenience for beachgoers seeking shade, it's a crucial step in preserving the natural habitat of these endangered creatures. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of the environment and avoid disturbing any potential nesting areas.

The beach's natural beauty is further enhanced by its windy conditions, which can be a draw for some and a deterrent for others. The wide expanse of sand, coupled with the clear waters of the Libyan Sea, makes it an attractive spot for relaxation and enjoying the Cretan coastline. Instagram+1
