"The paltry remains of the medieval fortifications seen here were a part of the fortress that saved the local populace from Turkish raids, especially one in 1457.
Possibly building upon a Byzantine initial structure, the Knights Hospitaler enhanced the fortress here to provide safety to the people of the region. People living in Southern Kos would seek refuge within it, just as those in the Central regions would rush to Antimacheia and the Northerners to the capital.
Findings suggest it remained in use until the 17th century, perhaps as the base of s local garrison. Nevertheless, it was since left into disrepair and gradually fell into ruins. Its materials were probably used to erect newer constructs.
The view is wonderful, there is no ticket, so a short pause could be rewarding. Caution is mandatory as the place is unattended and in ruins."
