Reviews Summary

Ideon Cave is lauded for its immense historical and mythical significance as Zeus's birthplace, offering a raw, authentic experience. Visitors appreciate the dramatic mountain views on the drive and the ancient altar. However, the strong smell inside the cave and the challenging, unpaved road access are frequently noted drawbacks.

"I would have given it 5 stars if not the unnecessary rails - in my opinion they could have been removed after the exploration of the cave. It is a really nice cave in terms of its shape and place, but the smell - it was hard for me to stay there longer, very strong smell of rotten wood and pigeon poop.
It was very nice just to stay a bit longer next to the cave, it was very calms, only the birds and the echoes of their wing flaps bouncing off the cave. Beautiful little flowers. Our 9y/o son says spent all the time playing with the remaining snow just next to the cave. I would suggest to grab some snacks with you as it is a very nice place to sit with the view of plateau and have some snacks."

"This is a beautiful archaeological site to visit. There are a lot of pigeons when you first approach which sounds like Zeus himself throwing out thunder. There was snow when we visited in March so the stairs were covered in the beginning but we were still able to make our way down the stairs to the cave. We couldn’t drive in as the gate was closed, but the gate to walk in was open. It’s quite remote but we are happy we did the drive. Pairing this cave visit with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum to see the artifacts found in the cave is a must!"

Vanessa Campbell

"I’ve seen many people turn back due to (presumed?) road conditions, It’s possible to drive up with a 2WD as long as you’re careful! Get to the site from Angoni in the north if you have a 2WD, other roads require a 4WD

Quite a number of people in these reviews confuse this cave with the diktaen cave or psychrocave and claim this one is not worth it.

The cave itself is not the typical fairytale cave- unlike the other contender - but rather the cave where you would expect Zeus to be hidden from Kronos. This has been a major site in the Minoan and Hellenic religions, evidenced by the finds made here, and just that fact makes it worth going. There is also a very interesting and imposing altar from antiquity at the entrance that is quite unique."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Myth and History of Ideon Cave

Ideon Cave, also known as Ideon Andron, holds immense significance as the legendary birthplace of Zeus, the king of the gods in Greek mythology. According to legend, Rhea hid her infant son Zeus in this cave to protect him from his father, Kronos, who was prophesying that he would be overthrown by his own son. The cave was a sacred site for the Minoans and later the Hellenes, serving as a place of worship and ritual. This deep connection to ancient religion is evidenced by the numerous artifacts discovered within its depths.Reddit

The archaeological importance of Ideon Cave cannot be overstated. Excavations have unearthed a wealth of artifacts, including pottery, bronze objects, and votive offerings, which provide invaluable insights into the religious practices and daily life of ancient civilizations. Many of these treasures are now housed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, making a visit to the museum a crucial complement to exploring the cave itself. The imposing altar at the cave's entrance is a tangible remnant of its sacred past, offering a direct link to the rituals performed there millennia ago.Reddit

While the cave's historical and mythical weight is undeniable, it's important to manage expectations regarding its appearance. Unlike more conventionally 'beautiful' show caves, Ideon Cave is a rugged, natural cavern system. Visitors often report a strong, distinct smell of pigeon droppings and decaying organic matter, which is a natural consequence of the large pigeon population inhabiting the cave. This raw, untamed atmosphere, however, is precisely what many feel contributes to its authenticity as the hiding place of a powerful deity.Reddit

Navigating the Journey to Ideon Cave

Reaching Ideon Cave is an adventure in itself, primarily due to its remote location and the challenging final approach. The last approximately 1.5 kilometers of the road leading to the cave are unpaved, rocky, and often single-lane. This section can be particularly daunting, especially if you encounter oncoming traffic, as there are often no safety barriers.Reddit

While many visitors successfully navigate this stretch with a standard 2WD vehicle, caution is paramount. Driving slowly, carefully selecting your path, and being aware of the terrain are essential. Some travelers recommend approaching from Angoni in the north, as this route is sometimes reported to have slightly better road conditions for 2WDs. However, the risk of a flat tire is a genuine concern for many who have made the journey, so ensuring your tires are in good condition and carrying a spare is advisable.Reddit

For those seeking a more comfortable or less stressful drive, a 4WD vehicle is recommended, particularly if you plan to explore alternative routes. The dramatic and sometimes treacherous drive, however, is often rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the vast plateau. This scenic aspect, combined with the anticipation of reaching a site steeped in myth, makes the journey a memorable part of the Ideon Cave experience.Reddit
