Monastery of Fotodotis in Naxos, originally built in 6th century AD. The section you see here in this video is the domed church built later on in the 16th century, supported by 4 marble columns. It has a marble temple with Byzantine sculptures and reliefs. The caretaker Georgia showed us around and opened the doors for us to have a look. Amazing bit of history off the beaten track and had the pla...

Reviews Summary

Fotodotis Monastery is a picturesque and serene historical site offering beautiful views and a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors appreciate the free entry and the unique architectural elements like marble columns and ancient stones. However, the lack of readily available historical information and limited English-speaking staff can be a drawback for some.

"The Monastery is quite picturesque, but lack of any information is frustrating. There was a guy at the spot who didn’t speak any English so we weren’t able to get any glimpse into the history of the place. You can climb up into the tower but there’s no view from there. Inside a beautiful church with plenty of marble decorations. There’s a dirt road leading to the monastery, not difficult, just rocky. Much better than hiking in 30 degrees because it’s about 2 kilometres up and down the hills."

Jarosław Skupiński

"A well-preserved monastery from the 6th century AD.
Walking there from the main road is 1.7km, maybe better to drive instead, but the road is narrow and bumpy.
Entrance is free."

Eugene Wong

"Fotodotis Monastery is at 500 m altitude, surrounded by oak trees, fig trees, vines, a large plane tree at its yard, and offers superb views to the Aegean sea and the island of Donoussa.

Every year on August 6th celebrates the feast of the Transfiguration, the courtyard hosts its annual festival.

Fotodotis Monastery is a worth visiting Naxos sightseeing, for the monastery itself and its surrounding area. Especially the stones, fallen from a deconstructed wall, are very intersecting.

Open hours: During Summer: 11am–2pm"
