Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Assos Venetian Castle for its absolutely stunning 360-degree views of the Ionian Sea and the picturesque village. The historical significance of the ruins and the rewarding hike up are also frequently highlighted as major positives. However, some note that much of the fortress is in ruins, and the steepness of the path requires good physical condition and proper footwear.

"Outstanding 360 degree views from the old battlements.

After a 30 minute walk, which is easy but also quite steep, you reach the main portico of the castle. From there you can scramble up to the old battlements if you’re brave enough, or stick to the stone pathway which will eventually lead to the modern and ruined prison.

This is a fascinating walk with some of the best views in all of Kefalonia. Stunning."

"The fortress is definitely worth seeing if you’re in Assos. But it’s not for those who don’t want to sweat. The way up takes about 20–30 minutes, and then you’re at the top by the tower, of which not much is left. In general, there isn’t much left of the fortress itself, but it must have been huge, as the area stretches far all around. To see everything, you’d easily spend 2 hours walking. We went down behind the tower and back to the fortress gate to rejoin the main path, instead of heading towards the sea – that would have been too exhausting in the heat.
The entrance is free. Free parking is available right in front of the entrance.

The way back along the beach is recommended, as you can see beautiful cliffs and beaches – but it’s a gravel road. The way up is fully developed, nicely paved, and there are partial shortcuts through the forest. However, please don’t wear flip-flops like so many people do!!"

"Spent my time walking to the castle. Took a journal and stopped along the way to write. It was a nice stroll. Some said it’s super strenuous but I went at 12:00-14:00 in June so with the sun’s placement, there’s lots of shade from trees along the way. There’s an abandoned church on the way up. It may be the church dedicated to Elijah the prophet. Elijah prepares the way for the second coming of Christ, and appeared to confer the priesthood to Peter, James and John. And again to The Prophet Joseph Smith. Lots to explore when you reach the top. 44,000 sq meters of old town! I brought 120 oz of water and wanted a bit more. The path up is beautifully paved. No tickets needed. It’s free."
