What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Delphi to Kirra hike is overwhelmingly praised for its beauty, ease (when hiking downhill), and historical significance. Travelers highlight the well-maintained and clearly marked path, the peaceful atmosphere, and the scenic views of olive groves and the countryside. Some note the presence of free-roaming animals and the convenience of water spouts. The main drawback mentioned is the strenuousness of hiking uphill from Kirra to Delphi, especially in summer.
"This is really a great hike. We did it mid September but only the way down from Delphi to Camping Delphi. That way it was very easy! In summer it would in my opinion be too steep especially because you still need strength to explore the archeological site. But that way it was a beautiful finish. The path is well marked and maintained. There are no difficult or exposed areas and you have a beautiful view throughout."

"We came across this path at the edge of the town of Delphi. It is the pilgrimage path that people would take from the port cities up to Delphi during the ancient times. It leads all the way to the seaside town of Kirra. From Delphi to Kirra, the path is just about entirely downhill and is fairly easy to hike. It’s about 11 km long and took us 2 hr and 10 minutes. The entire time we were on the path we did not see any other people other than passing through the towns (although we went in March during the down season). We did not stop along the way but the path passes through the small town of Chrisso if you needed a halfway point to stop. Along the way there are also tons of public water spouts for drinking. The path passes by a few empty churches, farms, and the last stretch takes you through an olive farm. It is very well marked, look out for red and yellow circles, arrows, or marked signs that lead you in the right direction. We encountered lots of dogs (one even led us through part of the hike!), cats, sheep, goats, and cows in free range. The town of Kirra where you end is very small but if you walk ten minutes into the town of Itea you will find some seaside restaurants. Be aware that there seems to be only one taxi stand in the town though.
Overall I would 1000% recommend this hike!! It is one of the most beautiful and peaceful hikes I have ever taken and it is so incredibly rewarding when you reach the bottom."

Understanding the Oracle of Delphi
There's ongoing discussion and fascination regarding the Pythia's trance-like state. Some theories suggest that geological factors, such as the presence of ethylene gas emanating from faults beneath the temple, may have contributed to her altered state of consciousness. This has led to intriguing reinterpretations of ancient prophecies and the very nature of the oracle's pronouncements.
Visiting Delphi today allows you to explore the archaeological site, including the Temple of Apollo, the ancient theater, and the stadium, immersing yourself in the history and mythology surrounding this legendary oracle. The nearby Kastalia Springs are also a point of interest, historically used for purification before consulting the oracle.
