What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the Corycian Cave's spiritual atmosphere and the breathtaking mountain vistas. While the hike can be challenging and the cave's interior less dramatic than some, its raw, undeveloped nature and deep historical significance make it a unique and memorable experience for those seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations.
"2.5 km uphill easy walking .
Astonished view 180 degrees from the mountains to the Corinth bay.
The cave itself is very interesting. You better read some about it"

"Not a huge amount to actually see here: but very much off the beaten track (literally!) and so it amounted to something pretty special. As someone very interested in history, to see this felt like living the past, not commercialised or developed in any way- though it also 'felt' spiritually dark.
Our guide managed to get the minibus all the way up to the end of the track- a feat worthy of Hercules himself! Left just a short climb to the cold cavern...
Not sure I'd want to go again, it has to be said."

"40 minutes by car from Delfi then 4 km hike up to the mountains. Your should leave your car somewhere the asphalt road cause the mountain path only accessable by jeeps or cross motors. The cave is full of with spiritual energy and it is nice that lot of visitors leave offerings there. Take some flowers meaningful offerings with you, you will love the experience."

The Mystical History of Corycian Cave
This rich mythological tapestry has led many to believe the cave was an early seat of prophecy, predating or serving as an alternative to the famous Oracle of Delphi. The myths speak of the Thriai, three 'bee maidens' or priestesses, who delivered oracles from this very spot. The cave's spiritual energy is palpable, with many visitors reporting a profound sense of connection to the past and the divine.
Archaeological findings, such as over 22,000 astragaloi (knucklebones used for games and divination), suggest it may have functioned as a 'dice oracle' for common people, offering a more accessible form of prophecy than the expensive consultations at Delphi. The presence of offerings, like fresh lilies, continues this ancient tradition, making the cave a living testament to enduring spiritual practices.
Navigating the Corycian Cave Hike
The hike itself is often described as an 'easy walking' uphill trek, but the consistent incline means it requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. The duration can vary; some describe it as a short climb after parking, while others mention a longer, more arduous journey. For those seeking a more immersive experience, a full-day hike directly from Delphi is also an option, though it is considered quite demanding. Regardless of the chosen method, the effort is rewarded with astonishing 180-degree views of the surrounding mountains and the distant Corinthian Gulf.
It's crucial to be prepared for the terrain. Sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended to navigate the rocky path safely. Bringing a reliable light source, such as a headlamp or flashlight, is essential for exploring the cave's interior, which can be quite dark. While the cave itself is a natural wonder, the journey there offers a genuine sense of wilderness and a departure from the more commercialized tourist spots.
