"These old venetian buildings used to be the place where ships were getring built and stored when it was dangerous for them to be left in the sea. They are a nice sight to look at while walking next to the sea."

"Interesting site when walking by the harbor. It is perfectly preserved monument of the Venetian port in Chania."

Ivan Dabić

"Neoria is the name given to ship houses in Greek civilization where sails, ship hulls and similar materials are stored in peacetime or in unsuitable weather conditions. Ships were built in Neorias, and their maintenance and repair needs were also provided in these places.

These Neorias, which you will see in the old southern port of Chania, were built in the 16th century when the Venetian fleet dominated the Mediterranean. There were 17 Neorias in total in this complex. The construction of 5 Neorias was started in another part of the port, two of which were completed.

During the period when Crete was under Turkish rule, Neorias were used as ammunition depots. Of the structures that were gradually demolished in the following periods, seven well-preserved structures survive today. Studies for the use of the buildings that host various cultural events for this purpose continue."
