"After the Ottoman invaders moved in, the archbishop was removed from the Parthenon (which was used as a church) and relocated to the Church of Agios Eleftherios. The church was built in 12 and 13 century and adorned with crosses and animals with flowers which date from the 2nd century A.D. which were in the agora and used during pagan times for Athena’s worship.

Around the church are multiple different crosses including the four V-shaped arms of the Maltese cross which was used during the crusades.

Visited on a weekday at noon."

The Unique Exterior Carvings

The Panagia Gorgoepikoos Church, also known as Agios Eleftherios or the 'Little Metropolis,' is renowned for its extraordinary exterior. Unlike many Byzantine churches, its walls are a canvas of stone carvings that tell a fascinating story. These reliefs feature a diverse array of motifs, including crosses of various designs, animals, and floral patterns. What makes these carvings particularly intriguing is their historical layering; some are believed to date back to the 2nd century AD and were originally part of pagan structures in the ancient Agora, later repurposed for Athena's worship before being incorporated into the church. Reddit

This fusion of pagan and Christian iconography is a rare and captivating feature. You'll spot symbols like the Maltese cross, a symbol associated with the Crusades, alongside more ancient motifs. The craftsmanship is remarkable, with each stone telling a piece of Athens' long and complex history. Taking the time to closely examine these details is a rewarding experience for anyone interested in art history and the evolution of religious symbolism in the city. Reddit

When photographing the exterior, aim for times with soft, directional light, such as early morning or late afternoon. This will best accentuate the texture and depth of the carvings, bringing out the intricate details that might otherwise be lost in flat lighting. Reddit

A Sanctuary of Byzantine Architecture

The Panagia Gorgoepikoos Church is a prime example of Byzantine architecture in Athens, representing a significant period of architectural and religious development. Its layout is a classic cross-in-square design, a common and effective plan for Orthodox churches, characterized by a central dome supported by four columns or arches. The church features a single dome, a hallmark of Byzantine style, which crowns the structure and allows natural light to filter into the interior. Reddit

Despite its relatively small size, often described as the smallest Byzantine church in Athens, the interior feels surprisingly grand. The domed ceiling and the soft lighting create an atmosphere of reverence and peace. Visitors often note the calm, meditative atmosphere within, providing a welcome contrast to the bustling city outside. While time has faded some of the original religious frescoes, their remnants still offer a glimpse into the church's artistic past. Reddit

Its historical significance is further amplified by its role after the Ottoman conquest, when it served as the seat for the archbishop. This history, combined with its architectural purity, makes it a must-visit for enthusiasts of ancient and religious architecture. Reddit
