What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Acropolis as a magnificent and essential Athenian experience, highlighting its architectural grandeur and historical significance. However, many note that it gets extremely crowded, even with timed entries, and advise visiting early or late to mitigate this and the heat. Some also mention issues with ticket purchasing options and specific transport ticketing requirements.
"The Acropolis is a magnificent piece of architecture. Frankly I don't understand why it isn't a wonder of the world.
This is a must see if you are in Athens however, even with the time slots it gets extremely crowded, so I suggest going in the early morning or towards the evening."
James Court
"NOTE: Make sure that you book early enough, because there are time slots and limits on the visitors. Often you can't buy single tickets, but only guided tour ones which are double the price. Of course, the guides provide a lot of valuable information, so it's a personal choice.
A hill dedicated to the goddess of Athena. Too bad her huge semi-golden statue was looted through the years and has not been preserved.
One gets amazed even before climbing the hill, where the ancient amphitheater and the music halls are located. Big and well preserved, used frequently even today for open-air events and music concerts.
Then comes the entrance portal, all made with big heavy marble columns. Once you pass through it, your eyes get stuck on the huge Parthenon, even bigger than you have imagined. Beautiful piece of ancient architecture. Too bad the Turks blew up its roof and many of its columns during the Otoman occupation.
The hill provides a great view of the city. And its adjacent hill provides an even better view of the Acropolis itself."

"This review is for the metro Acropolis to airport:
You must buy the €9 ticket for each person to get from this stop to the airport.
If you buy a ticket for “AIRPORT EXPRESS” and transfer from Acropoli to the blue line, you will get to the airport but you will be fined at the gate for not having the right ticket.
No-where is this marked at the kiosks selling bus or metro tickets directing you to make this purchase or be fined.
Buy the €9 ticket at the kiosk from here to the airport or pay the fine at the airport."
