What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Independence Arch Accra as an iconic and historically significant landmark, particularly beautiful when illuminated at night. The spacious square offers a great atmosphere for reflection and photography, with many appreciating the climb for city views. However, some note the need for better upkeep and mention issues with persistent beggars.
"The area is quite open and neat, so it can accommodate many people at once.
Nicely built structures that remind me of similar memorial structures in Washington. It's accessible even at night. The structures are well lit, so it is more aestatically pleasing at night, in my opinion. You can still take nice photos. But if you want to appear in them, you will need a good camera or special light of your own.
Downside for me going at night was the mosquitoes! I was almost eaten alive! For some reason, I wore pants instead of shorts, and that was a life saver! Have a plan to avoid mosquito 🦟 bites as much as you can!"

"Really loved here. Will surely be back. But I wish tour guides can be assigned here to help people get around. Also, the place could be neater given its historical significance. There are some Nigerians here begging people for money. It is really annoying. Something should be done about that as well."

"Visiting the Independence Square in Accra was such a beautiful moment for me. Standing under the grand Black Star Gate with the bold inscription “Freedom and Justice” felt like stepping right into history. The square is spacious and peaceful, despite the busy traffic. It tells the story of Ghana’s freedom in 1957 and stands as a reminder for generations to cherish independence. Walking around the square, I felt deeply connected to the spirit of Africa’s struggle and triumph.
It had palm trees swaying gently in the background, making it perfect for both reflection and photos.
If you ever visit Accra, make sure you don’t miss this iconic landmark. It’s more than sightseeing, it’s an experience that leaves you inspired as well as hopeful! 🌟"
