What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the City Walls, calling them a 'very nice walk' and an 'amazing experience.' The ability to walk almost the entire perimeter offers stunning, ever-changing views of the medieval town, its charming rooftops, and picturesque towers. It's a free, immersive journey into history, though some note the historical construction means ducking might be necessary.
"Rothenburg is one of the few medieval towns in Europe still surrounded by its original wall. What’s great is that you can walk almost the entire perimeter of the town along the wall. It offers stunning views of the medieval city from different angles. The full circuit is about 4,5 kilometers. The old wall isn’t exactly high-heel friendly, and taller visitors should keep in mind that people used to be shorter back in the day—so for much of the walk, you’ll find yourself ducking or tilting your head. We walked around the town at sunset, when the wall was peaceful and the light was beautiful. The last kilometer we did in the dark, but it didn’t matter—nearby houses cast a soft glow onto the wall, and if needed, our phones provided extra light. Walking on the wall is completely free. An amazing experience!"

"A very nice walk along the city walls. Strolling along this historic city wall that wraps around the old town, you’re treated to a changing panorama at every step. The charming rooftops, the fairytale-like houses, and the picturesque towers make this one of the most photogenic places you’ll ever visit. It’s not a walk to rush—take your time, snap your photos, and soak in the storybook scenery."

"Along the Romantic Road is Rothenburg ob der Tauber (population 11,000), a former free city of the Holy Roman Empire. A remarkable town with fully preserved walls and towers in a circle around the whole settlement. You can walk along the ramparts and look down on the landscape, which looks much the same as it did in the early Middle Ages, only a construction crane reminds you that we are still in the 21st century."
