"Sacred Heart Church
The Sacred Heart Church is a Catholic church built in 1929 by the Stuttgart architect Otto Linder in downtown Pforzheim. After its destruction in 1945, it was rebuilt by the same architect.
Due to increasing industrialization at the beginning of the 20th century, the population grew rapidly. This led to an oversupply of the Catholic church's capacity. For this reason, the foundation stone for the new church was laid on September 16, 1928. The Stuttgart architect Otto Linder built the second Catholic church in the city center in 1929, which was completed on October 19, 1929. It was the first church in the Archdiocese of Freiburg to feature contemporary architectural styles. The church is solidly constructed of golden-brown Cannstatt travertine.
On the north side of the elliptical central building is the entrance structure with a grand staircase and open gateways (portico). A magnificent fresco above the doors depicts Saint Christopher, the Redeemer. The exterior walls were ingeniously designed by the architect Linder. The central wall follows the curve of an ellipse and has a star-like shape. The upper wall, with its round-arched skylights, is elliptical.
On February 23, 1945, the church was destroyed in the air raid on Pforzheim, leaving only the tower and foundations standing. According to tradition, the tower, with its massive cross, once dominated the ruins of Pforzheim and was considered the "city's tomb cross."
Otto Linder, who built the church in 1928, took over the planning of its reconstruction in 1946. After the remaining crypt was flooded in 1947, reaching a depth of 1.60 meters, the final reconstruction was completed in 1951.
Extensive renovations took place in 1972.

Architectural Marvel of the 20th Century
The central building itself is an elliptical form, a bold departure from typical church designs. The walls curve with the ellipse, creating a star-like shape in the upper sections, which are punctuated by round-arched skylights. This innovative design was intended to accommodate the growing Catholic population due to industrialization at the time. The church's unique silhouette and thoughtful use of space make it a noteworthy landmark in Pforzheim's cityscape.
Tragically, the church was destroyed during the 1945 air raid on Pforzheim, leaving only the tower and foundations. However, the spirit of the original design was preserved. Otto Linder, the original architect, oversaw the reconstruction, which was completed in 1951. Further renovations in 1972 ensured its continued preservation. Today, Herz-Jesu-Kirche remains a testament to resilience and forward-thinking design, offering a unique spiritual and architectural experience.
