Reviews Summary

Oranienbaum Palace and Park is praised for its serene English-style park, featuring unique attractions like the Chinese House and Europe's longest orangery, often accessible for free. Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the ongoing restoration efforts, which offer a glimpse into history. While the palace itself is undergoing restoration, the park provides a delightful and tranquil experience.

"Oranienbaum Palace has a rich history dating back to the end of the 17th century. The beautiful building in the Dutch Baroque style is surrounded by a 24-hectare park in the English style. The whole thing creates a wonderful layout. For several days we wandered at different times of the day along the park alleys, admiring beautiful citrus trees and other exotic plants, a Chinese house, a pagoda, the longest orangery in Europe, numerous streams and bridges integrated into the surroundings.
It is also impossible not to mention the town itself, whose history is connected with the creation of the palace and park. We visited the town, park and palace in early August. During our walks, I was accompanied by birdsong and friendly smiles of the few strollers."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Charm of the English-Style Park

The 24-hectare park surrounding Oranienbaum Palace is a significant attraction, designed in the English landscape style. Unlike formal French gardens, this style emphasizes naturalistic beauty, with winding paths, picturesque views, and a harmonious integration of water features and structures. Visitors can wander along its alleys, admiring the exotic citrus trees and other carefully curated plants, a testament to the estate's historical horticultural endeavors. Reddit

The park is dotted with charming follies and architectural elements that enhance its aesthetic appeal. The longest orangery in Europe stands as a remarkable feature, hinting at the grand scale of past botanical collections. The Chinese House and a Pagoda add an element of exoticism and whimsy, reflecting the 18th-century fascination with East Asian aesthetics. Numerous streams and bridges are artfully woven into the landscape, creating a serene and romantic atmosphere perfect for leisurely strolls. Reddit

Many visitors find the park to be a peaceful retreat, especially compared to the more crowded imperial residences. The combination of natural beauty, historical structures, and the gentle sounds of nature, like birdsong, makes it an ideal spot for relaxation and quiet contemplation. It's a place where you can truly disconnect and enjoy the scenery. Reddit

Restoration and Historical Layers

Oranienbaum Palace has a unique history, having been taken over by a foundation for restoration relatively recently, around 2003-2004. This means that while parts of the palace and park are beautifully preserved, visitors may also witness the ongoing restoration process. This can be a fascinating aspect of the visit, offering a glimpse into the meticulous work involved in preserving historical sites. Reddit

Seeing the different layers of history being uncovered and restored can be incredibly interesting. It allows visitors to appreciate not just the finished product but also the journey of preservation. The palace itself, built in the Dutch Baroque style, offers a distinct architectural experience compared to other St. Petersburg palaces. Its history is deeply intertwined with the town of Lomonosov, which grew around the palace's creation. Reddit

This ongoing restoration means that the palace might feel less polished than some other major attractions, but this authenticity is precisely what many visitors appreciate. It provides a more intimate and educational experience, allowing for a deeper understanding of the site's past and its future. Reddit
