In the afternoon and evening, we (Viking Riverboat tour) visited the Schloss Vollrads winery and estate. This is a "castle" and a wine estate in the Rheingau wine-growing region in Germany. It has been making wine for over 800 years. The vineyard is upriver from Mainz, Germany and on the North side of the Rhine River. While the trip required a bus ride from Mainz, it was extremely worth the time and effort as all of the wines sampled were excellent (we bought a bottle of dry white Riesling wine that we tasted on our taste tour).
Schloss Vollards sits in a low area in the hills, surrounded by all of its vineyards. The estate is square in shape with a spring fed pond in the middle. All the buildings have the same style/architecture and are magnificent looking! There is even a tower building in the center of the estate. The place is very well maintained and even has its own restaurant! What a splendid way to promote your wines then with a special meal. Yes, I fell in love with this place and their products!
We took a walking tour of their expansive vineyards noting that they employ migrant workers for their harvest. Shelters are provided in the vineyards for the workers use during harvest. The hillside view of their vineyards was beautiful!"
