What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Saarschleife River Cruise offers stunning views of the iconic Saar loop and an interesting passage through the Mettlach lock. However, potential visitors should be aware that departures can be cancelled due to low passenger numbers, which has caused disappointment for some. Planning ahead and considering alternative operators is recommended for a smoother experience.
"Planned for the 90-minute trip, scheduled for departure on a Wednesday 11.00 hours, in season at the end of May. We arrived in time at around 10.15 hours and took place at the closed entrance. Because there were too few people, the crew informed us at 10.45 hours that the departure was cancelled. Nothing online informs you about a required minimum, and on site expectations were only managed after competitor Maria Croon left the dock at 10.30 hours.
The crew suggested to come back for the departure at 14.00 hours which was destined to depart because a group on a bus pre-booked their trip. However, this alternative did not fit our toddler’s sleeping routines and an hour later Mettlach proved not that exciting to keep you busy in the meanwhile.
We left baffled. Our toddlers, wearing a shirt with boats, still wondering why watching boats is so exciting. Ourselves, disappointed as we were not able to turn the cancellation into a delightful holiday morning.
We see room for improvement on primarily two levels. The first, being transparant about the minimum required people to depart, online and onsite. We still don’t know how many people are needed (tennish?). This would have set expectations right and would have let us had the choice to go with the competitor Maria Croon at 10.30 hours.
Second, when you do not have any pre-booked tickets and guests are waiting at your boat before 10.30 hours, actively inform them that they better leave with competitor Maria Croon. This makes your departure at 11.00 hours even more unsure, but it is respectful to the thoughtful planning of early arriving guests, and especially of our young family.
Please note, guests do not always know that both operators go the same route. If we had known (tip for others!) we would have planned for the 10.30 trip of Maria Croon with the SPS Saar as an alternative on 11.00 hours. Then we would have had two shots for departure.
In short for visitors: please know that departures can be cancelled upon the operator’s notice on site. Plan for the Maria Croon departure at 10.30 hours if available.
In short for SPS Saar: please inform guests better about your requirements and actively help them to experience the Saarschleiffe with Maria Croon when your departure is unsure."

Navigating Cruise Cancellations
To mitigate this, it's highly recommended to confirm the departure status before heading to the pier. While online information might be scarce, inquiring directly or checking local resources can help. A key piece of advice from fellow travelers is to be aware of alternative operators, such as Maria Croon, which may offer similar routes and have different minimum passenger requirements or schedules. Having this backup plan can turn a potentially disappointing situation into a successful excursion.
Transparency about minimum passenger numbers is an area where the cruise operator could improve. Clear communication, both online and at the pier, would allow visitors to set realistic expectations and make informed decisions, such as opting for a competitor's service if their own departure seems uncertain.
Experiencing the Saar Loop
From the boat, you'll also get glimpses of the treetop tower (Baumwipfelpfad Saarschleife), an impressive structure offering panoramic views from above. While the cruise focuses on the river experience, spotting the tower adds another dimension to the visual journey. The cruise typically lasts around 90 minutes, giving you ample time to soak in the views and capture photographs.
For the best experience, consider the seating arrangements. The upper deck offers unobstructed views, perfect for photography and taking in the full panorama. However, on sunny days, it can get quite hot, so wearing a hat and staying hydrated is advisable. Alternatively, indoor seating is available, providing a comfortable option if the weather is less favorable or if you prefer a more sheltered experience.
The Mettlach Lock
The process involves the boat entering a chamber, gates closing behind it, and then the water level being adjusted to match the next section of the river. This can take some time, so it's a good opportunity to relax and observe the mechanics of the lock. While it might not be as visually spectacular as the natural loop, it's a testament to human ingenuity and an essential part of river navigation.
