"Reformation Day.
Pretty much everything revolves around Martin Luther. So let's go to Lutherplatz in Cölln, the former village green. Small but pretty, it's usually just crossed. There's always quite a lot of activity at the art festival in spring (the largest in Meissen!). In the center is the Luther linden tree, planted by the schoolchildren on November 10, 1883. It's somehow touching to read about these children, who must all have passed away by now. But their linden tree blooms anew every year. Next door, among other things, is a popular playground, a popular Asian snack bar, and the Atelier Sauke. Until recently, there was one of the few historic laundry rollers still in use! My neighbor Irene enjoyed using it until the end, going for a "rolling." The rumbling and pumping reminded her of her youth. She liked it when the laundry lay freshly rolled in the closet, so incomparably smooth and soft. Now a neighbor is helping out with her lack of money, but it's not the same. What a pity.
Incidentally, even after the town was incorporated into Meissen in 1901, the square retained its name, and the square of the same name in the old town was renamed "At the Frauenkirche." In the old town, people aren't so fond of Luther anyway; they prefer to venerate Bishop Benno, the 11th-century saint. He's more suited to power, pomp, and luxury. And they resent the Lutherans for the destruction of Benno's tomb in the cathedral. And for the fact that his remains were lost to Munich, where they lie as relics in the Frauenkirche and are a destination for many pilgrims. It seems like an omen that the Luther oak tree at the Tuchmachertor, planted in 1830, simply fell over shortly after 11 a.m. on July 26, 1999. Hmm. He wished he hadn't demonized Saint Benno (polemic "Against the idol and devil that shall be raised up in Meissen"). Both of them could perform magic. The frogs in the Holy Ground can attest to that (Google "Bishop Benno's tales") ;-)
So, I'd better head back into the Triebischtal valley to the Luther Church (past the "Bennomütze"). Let's see if anything's going on there. Actually, I should also go out to Zaschendorf; they apparently call their village square Lutherplatz and have had a Luther linden tree since 1905. Maybe another time. There are too many witches around for me today. Small and large. A magical day. And so autumnally light and with southern warmth.
"Command the last fruits to be full;
give them two more southern days,
push them towards perfection, and
drive the last sweetness into the Meissen wine."
Trick or treat!"

"Beautiful monuments, not many of which can be found among fellow countrymen."
