What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Travelers overwhelmingly praise KD Rhine cruises for their incredible castle views and exceptional onboard service, with many highlighting the friendly crew and complimentary blankets. While the food is generally enjoyed, some find the return journey can become monotonous, and wish for more detailed historical narration.
"This was BY FAR the best Rhein cruise tour we have had! The staff were incredible! We opted for the top deck on a cold, rainy day and they offered us blankets for free to cover up as we rode! The menu here was delicious and the coffee amazing! Cannot say enough good things! The narration was easy to understand and the captain let me through to the captains area for photos! Such a great crew aboard! Well, well worth all the money spent! The views were unreal! So many castles! Literally a dream!"

"We went with our family on a KD cruise which started in Mainz and went to St Goar. Conrad was our host and he was amazing. When we no longer wanted to sit inside, he set us up with a table outside right near the side of the boat. When we were cold he got us blankets. My mother was in a walker and another gentleman, Carmello, helped her with the lift to get her downstairs to the bathroom. He was awesome as well. Very friendly. The reason for 4 stars is because of a few things: You really don’t start seeing more castles, forts etc until after Rodesheim. That’s where the photo time begins. As far as getting off and on, they only stay there a few minutes and may not come back around for a while so make sure you know when they are coming back. Finally, I love to learn and there were so many opportunities to learn about different wineries, castles etc. They did have a guide that spoke in both German and English, however I wanted to learn more. The guide only mentioned the castles and Loreley but nothing else. I wanted to hear more about the cities. All in all very picturesque and lots of photo opps but going back and forth from Mainz to St Goar and back got very long. We were on the boat from 9-6. The first half of the day was amazing but coming back because we had already seen everything got a little monotonous so you may want to figure out that as well. Happy travels."

"A fabulous day on the Rhine. We started in Bingen where there is easy cheap parking. Collected the tickets without any problems. Castle vista began almost immediately after we were off. Saw more than 20 on the way up to Koblenz. Plenty of options to sit inside or out. Cafe and restaurant on board. On return trip we got a train back to St Goar and reboarded for the return journey. This allowed us to spend more time for lunch in Koblenz, which would otherwise not have been possible."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider a shorter, one-way cruise to keep younger attention spans engaged. The €10 breakfast is a budget-friendly and tasty option to fuel up. While the historical commentary might be lost on very young kids, the visual spectacle of castles and the river itself is universally appealing. Pack snacks and drinks if you're concerned about onboard costs, but be aware of potential restrictions.
💰 Budget Travelers
The most significant cost-saving tip is to opt for a one-way cruise and return via regional train. Train tickets are often more affordable than a round-trip cruise, especially if booked in advance or using regional day tickets. This strategy also allows you to see more of the Rhine towns without the added expense of a full-day cruise.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Bring a versatile lens setup – a zoom lens is crucial for capturing details of distant castles, while a wide-angle lens is perfect for sweeping river panoramas. The 'golden hours' of early morning and late afternoon provide the best light. Don't miss the chance to ask about visiting the captain's bridge for a unique perspective!

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Navigating the Rhine: Cruise Options and Routes
When planning your trip, consider the duration. A full day on the boat (e.g., Mainz to St. Goar and back) can be lengthy, and some find the return journey less engaging after seeing the sights once. Opting for a one-way trip allows for more flexibility, such as spending extra time exploring a town like Koblenz before catching a train back.
Key takeaway: Research the different routes and consider a one-way cruise combined with a train return for a more dynamic experience. Always check the KD schedule for departure and arrival times, as they are strictly adhered to.
The Rhine's Enchanting Castles
Notable fortresses include Burg Rheinstein, Burg Reichenstein, and the iconic Mäuseturm (Mouse Tower) near Bingen. Further along, you'll see the imposing Marksburg Castle (the only one never destroyed), the romantic Burg Katz and Burg Maus near St. Goar, and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress overlooking Koblenz. The sheer number and dramatic settings make for incredible photo opportunities.
Pro Tip: The commentary provided on board offers insights into the history and legends of these structures. However, some travelers wished for more in-depth information. Consider doing a little pre-reading or using a good guidebook to enhance your appreciation of these historical marvels.
Onboard Comforts and Culinary Delights
The onboard dining is a significant part of the experience. The breakfast for €10 is frequently praised as a delicious and great-value option. For lunch and dinner, expect a menu featuring regional German specialties, snacks, and beverages. While specific dietary options might vary, the general consensus is that the food is good and complements the scenic journey well.
Remember: While the food is enjoyable, it's priced similarly to other tourist-oriented establishments. Bringing a book for the return journey is a common suggestion, as the scenery, while beautiful, can become repetitive on a long round trip.
