What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Feste Kaiser Franz to be a site of significant historical interest, particularly its preserved underground passages and the surrounding park. While the ongoing renovation means much of the fortress is inaccessible and can appear dilapidated, the guided tours offer a valuable glimpse into its past. Special events, like aurora viewings, are highly praised for their unique atmosphere.
"You can visit this place only 6 times in a year, place is under ronnovation."
Abdur Rahman
"Named after the Austrian emperor, an ally of Prussia, the Kaiser Franz Fortress was built in 1822 as part of the Prussian fortifications of Koblenz, and together with the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the opposite hill, formed a circle of fortifications around the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. In the mid-19th century, the Koblenz fortifications were considered the largest of their kind in the whole of Europe.
After being demolished in 1922, most of the remains were blown up again in 1959. However, the ends of the main road on both sides, the internal defense and accommodation buildings of the fortress, as well as the turrets and residential towers at the rear, have been preserved.
Since 1997, the ruins of the fortress complex have been managed by the Feste Kaiser Franz eV association.
After the Franz Fortress Park opens in 2022, the fortress itself is now being renovated.
Today I had the opportunity to visit the underground passages and arsenal, which are still being restored. It's a pity that I didn't see one of the features of Franz Fortress~~The last original oven in the Koblenz fortifications. It is said that it can bake up to 1,500 loaves of bread a day🍞!"
