Reviews Summary

The historical significance of the ruins and the charming old town below also receive high marks. While the steep climb is noted, many appreciate the alternative, easier path. "Burgruine Kallmünz is a medieval hilltop castle ruin perched on the Schlossberg spur (at about 433 m above sea level), overlooking the Naab and Vils rivers. The site has been fortified since prehistoric times, with Bronze Age and Celtic ramparts surrounding the plateau, and its medieval castle core dates back to around the 9th century. Known historically as a seat of the Counts of Kallmünz, the fortress was first officially mentioned in 983 and later held by the Wittelsbach dynasty.
Over the centuries, the castle saw various reconstructions—significant renovations under Ruprecht I in 1361—and endured destruction during the Landshut War of Succession (1504) and again during the Thirty Years’ War, when Swedish troops burned it in 1641. After being decommissioned, it eventually came under municipal ownership in 1793.
It’s open year-round and climbable; a short but steep hike from town leads through wooded paths. From the top, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views across the Naab/Vils river valleys and the quaint town below."

A Glimpse into History
However, its history is also marked by destruction. The castle suffered damage during the Landshut War of Succession in the early 16th century and was tragically burned by Swedish troops in 1641 during the Thirty Years' War. After falling into disuse, it eventually became municipal property in the late 18th century. Today, these weathered stones offer a tangible connection to Bavaria's rich past, inviting visitors to imagine life within its walls.
Exploring the ruins allows you to walk through layers of history. The preserved gate, the remnants of its defensive walls, and the central tower all tell a story of resilience and change. The tower itself, with its seemingly new and well-maintained staircase, provides a safe way to ascend and appreciate the historical significance of the site from above.
Navigating the Ascent: Paths to the Castle
For those seeking a more leisurely journey, an alternative path exists. After leaving the town and heading northeast along the river for about 700 meters, you can find an easier trail that leads back along the ridge line directly to the castle. This route is less strenuous and allows for a more relaxed appreciation of the surrounding landscape.
Whichever path you choose, the effort is rewarded upon arrival. The climb itself can be an enjoyable part of the experience, offering glimpses of nature and the town as you ascend. Remember to wear appropriate shoes, especially if opting for the steeper route, and consider the weather conditions.
