"The queue at the ticket office at the bottom of the castle hill was nothing compared to the wait in the middle, when transferring from the modern carriage for the lower slope to the veteran funicular to the top of the Königstuhl. When the sun is shining there is very little shade and just 2 benches for the sweltering queue. The view from the top is wonderful but it would have been nice to know about the delays in the middle. I would have chosen a quieter day."

I visited Heidelberg for the first time and the mountain railway was one of the highlights. I really liked that you can go directly up to the castle or, with a change of trains, all the way to the top of the Königstuhl. The change is a nice surprise because the second section is operated by the old train. It is slower but has a unique charm that makes the ride special.
It is also very convenient that the ticket for the railway includes entry to the castle. The views along the way are fantastic and the whole ride feels very relaxing.
A small tip: depending on the time of day, you should plan for about 15 to 25 minutes of waiting time, especially in good weather or on weekends. Overall it was a beautiful and well arranged experience that I would recommend to anyone visiting Heidelberg.
