Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Oberhafenkantine's unique leaning architecture and its delicious, authentic Hamburg cuisine, particularly the Labskaus. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service add to the charm, making it a highly recommended spot for a memorable dining experience. Some note that reservations are essential due to limited seating.

"This place has a long history and serves German (Hamburg) food. The dishes were of a very good quality, meat is very tender, and we also loved wine/beer here. Labskaus is one of the best in town! Everything is super cosy and has its charm :) Better reserve beforehand - the place is usually fully booked. Thank you Luca for finding a place for us and for giving the best service possible 😊 10/10 would bring my friend here ❤️"

Anna Zlobina

"A popular traditional place under the bridge. Inside seats are rather limited so please book in advance. The food is absolutely amazing. I ordered a Labskaus and Rundstück Warm (which is a roasted pork hamburger with side fried potato.. the sauce is super tasty!). Both dishes are excellent though the waitress warned me that not everybody likes Labskaus. The vibe is nice and I assume most of the customers are local, I can definitely imagine it as a harbor canteen!"

Huixin Zhu

"Excelent food, self service for the side dishes and salad, you can get however much you like. Authentic atmoshpere amd very friendly staff. For outside sitting you need a reservation, but we walked in and there were plenty of tables inside"

The Iconic Lean: Architecture and History

The Oberhafenkantine is not just a restaurant; it's a landmark. Built in 1927, this former harbor canteen is famous for its dramatic 8.7-degree tilt, making it more inclined than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This unique angle is a result of soil settlement and the building's construction on unstable ground near the harbor. The distinctive brick facade and its slightly precarious stance have made it an iconic symbol of Hamburg's maritime heritage and a magnet for photographers and curious visitors alike. Instagram+1

Inside, the atmosphere is just as charming as the exterior suggests. The cozy, intimate space retains much of its original character, offering a warm and inviting ambiance. Dining here feels like stepping back in time, with the gentle slope adding a playful, memorable element to the experience. It’s this blend of historical significance and architectural quirkiness that draws people from all over. Reddit

A Taste of Hamburg: Culinary Delights

The menu at Oberhafenkantine is a celebration of traditional Hamburg cuisine. The star dish is undoubtedly Labskaus, a hearty and historic sailor's meal made with corned beef, potatoes, and beetroot, typically served with a fried egg and pickled herring. While it might sound unusual, many visitors find it surprisingly delicious and a must-try for an authentic taste of the region. Reddit

Beyond Labskaus, other popular choices include the Rundstück Warm, a flavorful roasted pork hamburger served with fried potatoes and a special sauce, and various fish dishes like Matjes (herring). For those seeking lighter options or vegetarian choices, the Knusperfladen with apple-schmand is a well-regarded alternative. Don't forget to leave room for dessert; the cherry crumble cake has been described as 'amazing' and 'super delicious,' a perfect sweet ending to a hearty meal. InstagramReddit
