"As museums go this one is very special. Whilst most of us just know of the PoW side of the castle's history, there's more to it.
Accordingly it is not right to focus on one aspect of the history and the way to get around that is very impressive.
We spent three hours exploring and the time flew by. Lots of interactive guidance and it is all quite fascinating.
We also stayed in the castle's hostel, which was very clean, good value and provided 1/2 board food."

We were fascinated by the stories and virtual presentation is first class. It was not too busy and the town itself has some nice character and a few places for lunch. Add this fascinating place to your itinerary if you can!"

The Great Escapes of Colditz
The ingenuity displayed by the POWs was remarkable. They devised elaborate plans, including digging tunnels, creating false walls, and even constructing gliders from scavenged materials. The castle's unique layout, with its multiple levels and interconnected buildings, provided both challenges and opportunities for these daring individuals. The interactive museum at Colditz Castle vividly brings these stories to life, allowing visitors to understand the risks and cleverness involved.
Beyond the famous WWII history, Colditz Castle has a much longer past, dating back over 1000 years. It has served as a residence for Saxon electors, a hunting lodge, and even a mental asylum. The castle's architecture reflects these various periods, offering a rich tapestry of history. The current museum effectively blends the medieval and Renaissance aspects with the more recent POW era, providing a comprehensive historical experience.
Experiencing Colditz with the HistoPad
The HistoPad transforms a static visit into an engaging journey through time. It allows you to see virtual representations of how certain rooms looked during the POW era or witness animated sequences of escape plans in action. This technology makes the history tangible and accessible, particularly for younger visitors or those less familiar with the specific events.
While the HistoPad is a fantastic tool, some visitors also appreciate the raw, unrenovated state of certain parts of the castle, which lends it a unique 'lost place' atmosphere. This contrast between the high-tech HistoPad and the ancient, sometimes stark, architecture creates a powerful and memorable experience.
Beyond the POWs: Colditz Castle's Broader History
Over the centuries, Colditz Castle has also served other purposes, including a mental asylum and a hospital. These diverse functions have left their mark on the structure and its stories. The castle's current presentation acknowledges this broader historical context, offering visitors a more complete understanding of its significance beyond the famous prisoner-of-war era.
This layered history contributes to the castle's unique atmosphere. Visitors can appreciate not only the dramatic WWII escape stories but also the enduring presence of centuries of human activity within its walls. The combination of historical periods makes Colditz Castle a rich destination for history enthusiasts.
