Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Brunswick Palace for its stunning architecture and central location, highlighting the free access to the museum and rooftop Quadriga. The palace's dramatic history of destruction and reconstruction adds to its allure. While some appreciate the modern shopping complex, others find it detracts from the historical ambiance.

"Stunning City Palace with a remarkable history. The old home of the Dukes of Braunschweig, the last of whom abdicated in 1918, the Schloss was destroyed twice, first by fire and then of course in the bombing raids of the Second World War. Against massive protests it was demolished in the 1960s and finally rebuilt in the 2000s to cover a shopping mall.

You can easily spot the parts that came from the original Schloss. The architecture is beautiful and the site is in the centre of the city so absolutely a must visit when in Braunschweig. There’s a small museum in the left hand wing of the palace that is free, as well as the lifts to see the Quadriga at the very top that’s also free for the time being. The entrance is just to the right of the main entrance."

"In Brunswick's schlossplatz stands the stunning building known as Brunswick Palace. When I passed by this majestic monument on the route to Gaussberg Park, I must admit that it was awe-inspiring. Only when I travel to the UK do I see monuments like this.

According to what I was told, this palace was constructed sometime in the 18th century and underwent a number of renovations over its existence. I have heard that it once served as a residence for the Brunswick dukes in the 18th century.

Wonderful to pass past this building."

Emmanuel Houston Kwashie

"It was a wonderful visit, as it is located in the city center, and it was the residence of the dukes from 1753 to November 8, 1918.. Within it is the Schloss commercial complex, which contains a wide range of shops such as clothing, food, restaurants, electronics, cosmetics, and perfumes... It is wonderful. If you visit the city of Braunschweig, do not forget to go there and take souvenir photos"

The Rebirth of a Landmark

Brunswick Palace, or Residenzschloss, boasts a fascinating history marked by destruction and remarkable reconstruction. Originally erected in the 18th century as the ducal residence, it suffered significant damage from fires and, most notably, the bombing raids of World War II. Despite its historical importance, the palace was controversially demolished in the 1960s to make way for a shopping mall. However, public outcry and a desire to preserve the city's heritage led to its meticulous rebuilding in the 2000s. Today, the palace stands as a testament to resilience, seamlessly integrating its historical architecture with modern commercial use. Visitors can often distinguish between the original surviving elements and the newer reconstructions, adding another layer to its story. TikTok

Exploring the Palace's Offerings

While the palace's exterior is a grand sight, its interior offers several points of interest. The Residenzschloss Museum, located in the left wing, provides a free glimpse into the history of the Dukes of Braunschweig, detailing their lives and the palace's past. For breathtaking panoramic views of Braunschweig, a visit to the rooftop terrace is a must. Here, you can also get up close to the impressive Quadriga, a magnificent chariot sculpture that crowns the palace. The palace complex also functions as a vibrant shopping center, featuring a diverse range of stores from fashion and electronics to cosmetics and perfumes, making it a hub for both cultural exploration and retail therapy.
