Reviews Summary

Harpener Teiche is appreciated as a peaceful local recreation area, particularly for its abundant wildlife like fish and birds, and the unique, though inconsistent, turquoise water. However, some visitors find the natural smells and lack of a proper circular trail detract from its appeal as a destination.

"Wow"

Stevo Difi

"Well, after all the online hype, I had imagined the whole thing to be a bit more "spectacular." The turquoise water is barely visible. And it has quite a musty smell. But if you come across naturally murky water again on your walk, the musty smell disappears. However, there are many fish in the pond, some of them quite large. Geese and other birds feel very comfortable here. It's quite okay for a stroll.

I wouldn't go there again just for the "atmosphere.""

Sally Schmidt

"The Harpen Ponds are a lovely place for a stroll – if you happen to live nearby. There's actually one highlight: at one point, the water shimmers in an almost Caribbean turquoise. For a moment, you feel like you're standing in front of a postcard – if it weren't for the rather pungent smell that quickly brings you back to reality.

Less successful: There's no proper circular trail. Anyone who wants to walk all the way around the ponds will inevitably have to take dirt roads, which somewhat detracts from the idyllic setting. And overall, it's not exactly spectacular. Conclusion: It's perfectly fine for a short walk in the neighborhood, but not really a destination worth traveling for. The turquoise water remains the small highlight, with a big question mark in the air."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Water Phenomenon

Harpener Teiche is known for its occasional display of Caribbean-like turquoise water. This unusual coloration is a result of the water's inflow, which originates from mine water. While not always present, this vibrant hue is a fleeting highlight that surprises visitors. Be aware that the water can also appear murky and may carry a distinct, sometimes pungent, smell, particularly near the source of the inflow. This natural characteristic is part of the reserve's unique charm, reminding visitors of its industrial past influencing its present natural state.

Despite the water's variable appearance and smell, the reserve is a thriving ecosystem. Large fish, often identified as carp, are frequently seen in the ponds, indicating a healthy aquatic environment. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to observe, with numerous families of ducks and herons making the ponds their home. The presence of this diverse wildlife underscores the reserve's importance as a local habitat.

Navigating the Reserve's Trails

Visitors looking for a well-defined, paved circular trail might be slightly disappointed. Harpener Teiche offers a more natural, less manicured experience. While a path allows you to circumnavigate a significant portion of the ponds, it often transitions into dirt roads. This means that for those seeking a complete loop, the journey involves navigating less maintained terrain. It's advisable to wear appropriate footwear, like sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, especially after rain.

Despite the trail's less formal nature, the reserve provides some recreational elements. Along the paths, you'll find an in-ground trampoline and a balancing game with ropes, offering fun activities for both children and adults. These additions make the reserve a pleasant spot for a casual outing, even if the primary focus is on enjoying the natural surroundings and observing wildlife. The free parking adjacent to the Ruhr Park shopping center adds to the convenience for visitors.
