What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
This REWE at Ostbahnhof is praised for its convenient location within the train station and its extended opening hours, including Sundays. Visitors appreciate the availability of essentials and a good selection of vegan products. However, some reviews mention a less pleasant atmosphere in the surrounding area due to the presence of homeless individuals, and one incident highlighted poor customer service regarding price discrepancies.
"The events in right order that happened to me here today:
1 looked at discount on apples
2 took the apples and other produts to a self pay kasse
3 forgot what sort of apples it was
4 asked a worker
5 worker helped me with finding the right sort on apples on screen
6 saw the price being higher than the price tag
7 looked carefully how many gramms there are and how much a price for kilo on screen vs on price tag was. These were not the same
8 decided to take a look on the apples just to be sure
9 the worker shouted at me for going back to the store to check for price that I have to pay first
(Yes, it was close to closing time. But there were 3 other self checkout machines free. And people were let in the store after me paying for food and packing my bag. So I don't think it was a bad thing for me to do)
10 she says I am steeling the products (at this point I am confussed and sad)
10 I explained to the worker that I want to go check for the apples because I am not sure (yes, the 1 euro difference is important for me because I experience food insecurity and had urgent expenses this month)
11 she continues to shout at me saying that I have to pay first
12 I say that I can leave the trolley with all my things next to the self checkout machine and go check (It is about 10 meters from the place of this interaction)
13 after back and forth with her speaking on very loud volume to me and me saying in normal volume she said she will go and check with me
14 we went there, the price tag indeed is with other price. Than she said that it is is if you buy a whole carton box (not the package, a box). Yes, she was right and I was wrong about the price tag (I am dyslexic so it happens). (She also was very close some times while speaking loud (from this point she wasn't agressive towards me anymore)
I have theories why it happened (first time in 4 years I live in Germany and first bad interaction with any worker in this specific Rewe:
-She didn't like me giving her problems with having to go to the machine and cancel already scanned things
-I have crutches and so I am visibly disabled
-My german language has a strong accent and a lot of wrong grammar
-It was late and she was tired and so more annoyed
-She didn't like that I didn't believe her telling me the price
-She didn't like that it was important for me to not spend this extra euro
I am confused and don't know whether the real answer is somewhere in theories I listed. Because I don't understand why she chose to shout at me, like no things from the list would cause me to go to a person I don't know and shout at them
I don't like being yelled at. I am scared and want to cry in these moments. I don't like that it happened to me today. I don't like how unexpected it was. I don't like that I went to the rewe today to buy something sweet to cheer me up because I am having an awful week. I don't like that I choose not to shout at people when I reeeeeeeally want to and random people at random moments decide to shout
I think we owe strangers kindness. This was not a kind interaction. I hope she will have a day she deserves"

"Great store in the worst place ;(
There are a lot of junks, homeless people and the constant smell of urine make the experience awful.
Rewe, please, if you could make it better, please do."

"Solid grocery store, with a pretty large selection. Found high-protein bread, cottage cheese and cookie (yes, high protein cookies). As a bodybuilder, this was great.
Some shortcomings:
- no canned sardines or salmon (the healthiest of fishes)
- no travel-size shaving foam, and generally a very small cosmetics isle
- weird line of strange-looking people outside that weren't actually waiting in line? Don't know what the deal is with them but I've never seen this in front a a grocery store in my life, and I've traveled to 30+ countries. Made me feel I should wait in line to be admitted into the store, but I walked right in to the left of them and nobody said anything. Strange."

Navigating the Ostbahnhof Area
Despite the surrounding environment, the REWE itself is a functional and well-stocked supermarket. Its accessibility via multiple public transport lines, including the S-Bahn and regional trains, makes it a practical stop for both locals and tourists. The proximity to the station platforms means you can easily pop in before or after your journey.
Shopping Experience and Customer Service
However, one review detailed a negative customer service interaction involving a price discrepancy at the self-checkout. The customer reported being yelled at by a staff member when trying to verify a price difference. While the staff member eventually clarified the pricing, the initial aggressive behavior left the customer feeling upset and confused. This isolated incident suggests that while the store is generally functional, customer service can be inconsistent.
For those needing cash, the store offers a convenient cash withdrawal service. You can ask the cashier to 'abheben' (withdraw) and specify the amount, functioning much like an in-store ATM. This is a useful feature for travelers who may need Euros on hand.
