What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Altes Schloss Hohenbaden, calling it a favorite castle ruin in Germany. The free entry, stunning panoramic views from the tower, and the opportunity to explore at leisure are consistently praised. Some mention the challenging climb to the top and the potential for muddy conditions after rain, but overall, it's highly recommended for its historical charm and scenic beauty.
"Highly recommend this self-guided, free tour of castle ruins in Baden-Baden; no crowds; explore at your leisure; offering sweeping views of Baden-Baden and the black forest. I was fortunate to arrive in-between rain showers - the sky cleared long enough to climb to the very top (challenging for those afraid of heights, but safe enough with hand rails) and take in spectacular views. You can access by car to a parking area at the base of the castle, or further down there are hiking trails and that appear to have water fountains. There is a public restroom as you enter (sans toilet paper), a restaurant and small cafe. Unfortunately there is some trash left by unappreciative people."

"Very cool place to visit even with kids with some fantastic panoramic views overlooking Baden-Baden and the Black Forest. I had a bit of a difficult time sometimes due to the fact that I’m afraid of heights 😅 but after challenging myself to go I did not regret it. I didn’t have enough time to look around as much as I wanted but I would like to come back one day with the camera to take better photos."

"Beautiful castle ruins that you can spot from Baden-Baden city centre and that you can visit either by hiking there (about 1h-1h30) or driving there (there’s a free parking lot, but not very big).
It’s our second time here and both times it was raining, so bring appropriate clothing and footwear. Since it was very muddy, we didn’t explore the forest around much, we’ll try once again during our next visit this summer.
But it’s still gorgeous and worth a visit!"

A Glimpse into History
The castle experienced periods of expansion and modification, reflecting the changing needs and architectural styles of its time. It was one of the largest residential castles of the 14th century, showcasing its former grandeur and importance. Despite its eventual decline and partial ruin, the structure still evokes a powerful sense of its past, offering visitors a tangible connection to medieval German history.
Today, the well-preserved ruins are a testament to its enduring legacy. Visitors can explore the remnants of its fortifications, residential areas, and courtyards, imagining life within its walls centuries ago. The historical significance combined with the dramatic setting makes Altes Schloss Hohenbaden a compelling destination for history enthusiasts.
Capturing the Castle: Photography Tips
When exploring the ruins, focus on the textures of the weathered stone, the ivy-clad walls, and the architectural details that speak to the castle's long history. Consider using a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of the views and the scale of the castle complex. For close-ups, a telephoto lens can help isolate interesting architectural elements or distant landscape features.
Remember that weather can play a significant role in your photography. While sunny days offer clear views, overcast skies can create a more moody and atmospheric feel. If it's rained recently, the damp stones and lush greenery can add depth and color to your shots. Be mindful of the uneven terrain and wear appropriate footwear to safely navigate the site.
The Experience of the Wind Harp
The sound of the wind harp adds an extra layer of atmosphere to the already evocative setting. As you wander through the ancient stones, the gentle or sometimes more robust music generated by the wind can transport you back in time, enhancing the feeling of being immersed in history. It's a subtle yet powerful element that contributes to the overall magical experience of visiting the castle.
