What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are impressed by the natural beauty and panoramic views surrounding Armazi Fortress, though the fortress itself is largely in ruins. The hike is considered rewarding but requires sturdy footwear due to potentially slippery trails and sparse signage. Some find the ruins less spectacular than anticipated, but the overall experience is positive for those who appreciate nature and a moderate hike.
"I am more impressed by the forest than the citadel itself. Expected a little more from it but not that it’s not worth it. It took me around 60mins on slow pace to reach the citadel from monastery. There are hardly any signs and sometimes hard to understand which path to follow. Some trails were very slippery even though I have normal hiking shoes. In the middle of the path you will also find refreshing spring water. There are a lot of locations for camping as well. Overall I am happy with the hike but wouldn’t want to repeat it."

"An architectural monument 3-4 kilometers from Mtskheti railway station, at the head of Armaziskhevi, on a high rocky mountain that is difficult to climb between two ravines. It dates back to the XIII-XV centuries.
The castle consists of a wall and a tower. It is built with crushed stone. It is badly damaged. The entrance to the castle was in the southeast. The rampart is trapezoidal in plan (26 X 27.5 m.). The tower stands in the southern part of the wall. It is a rounded triangular prism. The first floor is deaf. Inside, its corner is turned into a thumb for agricultural purposes. The entrance is on the second floor, from the north side. There are large windows on this floor. Only the lower part of the walls of the third floor has survived.
In 2006, it was awarded the category of national importance by the decree of the President of Georgia."

"From the monastery it’s a 45/60 minutes hike. You’ll have stunning views from the fortress. Enough shade to walk on a summer day. You need good walking shoes, no slippers."
