What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning Italian-style gardens and the absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of Avignon and the surrounding landscape. The historical significance of the abbey ruins adds a unique charm, and the on-site cafe is a pleasant spot to relax. Some minor critiques were noted regarding specific garden areas, but the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive.
"The walk from and to the centre of Avignon was delightful, and we bought apricots and cherries in the Thursday town market before walking up the hill to the fort and abbey. The abbey garden is really beautiful with a rich and long Cristian heritage. The cafe/restaurant has stunning views and excellent coffee. I was slightly disappointed by the attempt at a wild garden near the lilly ponds. I absolutely love wild meadows, but this was perhaps the wrong place - perhaps something more formal with a lavender or rose theme would be more appropriate. This is a small comment to what is otherwise truly magnificent. Thanks for a wonderful day!"

"This former Benedictine abbey, dating back to the 6th century, is a serene and artistic site that combines historic ruins with beautifully restored Italian-style gardens. Originally a Christian pilgrimage site in the early Middle Ages, it grew into an important Benedictine center by the 10th century. The abbey's religious function ceased after the French Revolution in the 17th century. Today, the site offers sweeping views of Avignon, the Rhône River, the Alps, and Mont Ventoux, making it both a place of historical reflection and scenic beauty.
Note: The fortress ruins can be accessed with a separate admission.
※ Included in the Avignon City Pass."

"The walk up is a bit tough when it’s hot out but it was really the best view once you got up there. Cute little cafe where you can have a snack and cold drink. Very nice place to spend an hour or two."
