What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Ouvrages du Libron to be a fascinating and impressive display of 19th-century hydraulic engineering, particularly its ingenious solution to river flooding. While access requires a bit of a detour, the historical and technical significance makes it a worthwhile stop for those interested in such marvels.
"Fascinating démonstration of a "Victorian" solution to allow the Canal to cross a river that suddenly can be overflowing after a heavy downpour, when both River and Canal are on the same levels.
I don't think it still is in operation, but being so sturdily built, almost certainly could be brought into working order again.
You have to know that it exists as it's hidden away maybe 10 minutes along an unmade track which looks like it would end up nowhere.
The idea was to bring into operation gates on either side of the river part to allow the escape of the flood water, by closing the canal in the way locks operate... After the release of the river water, the canal would resume operation.
Worth a visit if it's a subject you are interested in. Spend about 40 minutes.. It would help to read up on the project's website before going, to understand everything. There is a bicycle path.. Rough car (free) parking for a few vehicles."

"Walking and cycling the Canal du Midi towpath, this feature was completely unexpected and kept us for ages as we read the panels and explored how the Ouvrages work. Essentially, it's an 1855 steampunk solution to how to stop the River Libron, in flood, from washing huge amounts of debris into the 1681 canal. The river gets split, diverted and channelled so that the canal stays pristine and traffic on it can continue. Marvelous."

The Ingenious Engineering of the Ouvrages du Libron
When the River Libron was in flood, these gates would isolate the section of the canal where the river crossed. The river's floodwaters would then be diverted and channeled away, preventing debris and torrents from damaging the canal or disrupting traffic. Once the flood subsided, the gates would reopen, and canal navigation would resume. This 'steampunk' solution was crucial for maintaining the integrity and functionality of the Canal du Midi.
While it's believed the Ouvrages du Libron may no longer be in active operation, their robust construction means they could potentially be reactivated. Visiting the site offers a tangible connection to this historical engineering challenge and its innovative resolution.
